Another Intrigue Trans Issue
Hi new to site. Have found loads of good info but still can't pinpoint my problem. Please help. My 98' Intrigue with 3800 SII has 87k on newer motor. Original complaint was an erratic speedometer, and hard shifts during city driving once warm. On road trip using cruise control, rpms raced up to 4500-5500 before I knew it, threw a rod and locked up(newer motor). After replacing motor, I got the left SES light on and the trans eventually went out, and would no longer shift. Replaced the trans and now have the left SES, Antilock, and TracOff lights on. The car will drive fine and shift fine until it heats up, then shifting happens at a higher RPM range, and up shifts, and down shifts erratically, or better yet, at will! and will stay in 1st or 2nd gear. I had to drive 4 miles home at 25mph! i just went out to start it up since its been a few days , and the idle is staying at 1500rpm's which is about 500-700rpm higher for my car. From what I undersand the following could be the culprit of my problem('s): TPS, VSS, EBTCM, Shift Solenoid, CPS. I'm just getting fed up with it and tired of putting cash into it at this point. If anyone can help pinpoint my problem, the first round is on me down at Hockeytown!

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
My fault, the left SVS light is correct. I replaced the transmission myself....not fun at all if you don't have a lift. But anyway, I was a diesel mechanic, and do most of the repairs on my vehicles myself unless its something I don't think I can tackle. As far as cars, I guess that makes me shadetree!
I have had hard shifting issues with the car for awhile now(once it gets warm) even before I replaced the trans. When I installed the newer trans, I bent two pins in the receiving plug which caused the transmission to only have the higher gears; probably 3rd because the takeoff from a stop would be akin to wear or slippage of the trans. I was able to straighten the two pins and plug in and immediately the shifting was normal. Then once it got hot, thats when the erratic shifting and high rpm would start. I'm going to double check that ground to make sure its correct. I do think that the SVS light came on after my installation of the trans, but I'm just not sure. I won't be able to take the car to the transmission shop so they can read the codes until wednesday, but I will update once I find anything new. krivasauto thanks for the input, anything helps! |

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
you really need togo to a GM dealer with a Tech2 scanner and get your car scanned. For the $50-100 you spend you will save way more.
A 98 Intrigue is worth maybe $2000 tops -keep that in mind when investing in this car. -You might be able to find another Intrigue (or 3800) for cheaper than it is to fix yours. |

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
I remember after installing the transmission, the SVS light did came on. It wasn't on before the install. Yesterday I removed and repositioned the ground wire that goes to the transmission. There are two other smaller wires that are using the same ground. I don't think that matters, but does it? I'll try to relocate the two smaller wires elsewhere for ground. I'm not sure what they go to. the only thing in the vicinity that they may possibly ground to would be the starter.
I also made a trip to the JY and found an EBTCM, installed, and the warning lights are still on. Havn't had a chance to road test yet. Things are coming back to memory, as I did the job back in October. When the original trans went out, I think thats when the Antilock and TracOff warning lights came on. Still can't make it to the dealer yet for proper scan. I'll keep you posted. |

When you say the ground can get messed up, what exactly do you mean?

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
Often the ring connector gets stuck on the nut or stud, so when you pull it off, it twists the wires out of the connector, and then it doesn't get repaired right. Or, worse, it damages it, but the damage goes unnoticed.

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
You are the man. I do believe my ground may be "messed up". tomorrow I will confirm and repair if needed. Thanks for the PROMPT and DETAILED response!
Another thing, though...Apparantly I don't have the Bosch ABS System, and according to my handy dandy Clymer manual, my EBTCM sits under the dash just above the parking brake pedal. My ABS unit under the hood looks differently then the unit in your pictures under your 'EBTCM Replacement' post/link. I havn't done anything with this, but was curious if you had any information about it. Thanks again. |

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
Does this vehicle have a downshift adjustment? I have this vehicle, also, and may have inadvertantly changed the setting. The first post notes the transmission was changed......maybe this needs adjustment. I don't know. The cable I refer to is from the "carb" around the top of the "computer" box and goes down in the area of the radiator. And has an adjustment on that cable. Is it a kickdown adjustment, and what is done to adjust this?

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
Sorry I havn't posted because I havn't done anything else to the car besides check the grounds and found no damage. I plan on taking to dealer to get complete scan, but at $87.00 for that...I was in no rush!
One thing I did want to attempt to check before I went to the dealer was the ABS connectors on the hubs. Should I look for resistance (ohms) or volts? Exactly how do I check them? |

jbugj could you please be more specific....carb?....computer? I'm not sure about a kickdown adjustment. Exactly what does this adjustment do? |

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
I haven't researched any tech manuals, so I'm just guessing......I should have said from the Throttle Body (carb), and over towards the "computer"....the housing integrated with the air filter, the cable runs over the top of everything toward the front and then down. Some cars, and I don't know if that is what is is, or if still used, used a cable to control pressures in the transmission for downshift, etc. I could research this.....just curious if someone know if this cable is associated with the transmission, and even if not, what it is for.......and the adjustment procedure for it. There is an adjustment mid-cable......

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
Krivasauto - like I said.....I may have inadvertently changed the setting on the cable I describe......is it the CC? And what adjustments are made on that? Thanks for any help.......

Hahahahahahahaha!!! I'm laughing to keep from crying
![]() C1232, C1222, C1226, C1232, C1233, C1257, C1262, C1263, C1265, C1266, C1273, C1286, C1287. The codes, 222, 233, 226, 232, and 233 are all dealing with the wheel sensors. Codes 262, 263, 265 and 266 are all dealing with either inlet or outlet valve solenoid malfunctions. Code 273 deals with TCS malfunction. Codes 286 and 287 deal with steering sensor malfunction. I have no idea what code 273 is about yet. Hopefully most of these codes will just be redundant for the same root problem. I'm hoping the left wheel speed sensor will be the main cause for so many codes. I also was told by the guy at the repair shop that I have a grounding issue as well. Front and rear. Yippie ![]() Oh and if you are curious...my CEL came back on as well ![]() P0300, P0502, P0503, P0717, P0718. Code 300 is random cylinder misfire, and the 717, 718 are rooted from the trans problem. Codes 502 and 503 are speed sensor issues. I have my work cut out and am not sure exactly where I should start. PLEASE can anyone guide me as to where I should begin? Thanks, Silas |

Re: Another Intrigue Trans Issue
FINALLY.....got to this problem and got it fixed! It ended up being the left front wheel sensor, but I replaced both front hubs because the right side was beginning to have play, which would need to be replaced soon anyway.
SVS, ABS, TRAC lights have all gone away. Still have hard upshifts so I will add Trans Seafoam to help clean up the trans a bit. The only light on now is the SES, and the only code I have now is P0122 (TPS). When the car gets just over 3000 rpm's it starts to bog. The TPS gets replaced this evening, and I was told by the dealership that the injectors are clogged. I was going to add a good injector cleaner to see if that helps clean them up. Anyone have a general idea how long injector cleaners take to work? |
