your opinion on 89 supras
i am considering buying an 89 supra, but i don't know much about the car besides that it's rear wheel drive and has alot of horse power. can all you people with supra experience enlighten me on its positive and negative aspects? especially being as old as it is, is it really worth it?

Re: your opinion on 89 supras
The turbo model is a good choice. It has head gasket issues. Put a metal head gasket in if it dosen't have one already. Other than that the only issues are the same as with any other old car. Fluid leaks, worn parts, etc. The 7MGTE can produce quite a bit of power. With the rise in cost of more popular Japanese sports cars the MKIII Supra is a good choice. Because of its age and limited run some parts, such as interior and trim, can be hard to find.

Re: your opinion on 89 supras
The 1989 Supra can be as reliable as any other car - or it can be as big of a POS as any other car. It is all in how well it is maintained.
BHG? I got my 1989 Turbo with 50k miles on it. The motor had never been touched. I retorqued the head at 74k miles. I now have over 186k miles and the motor has still never been touched. NO BHG. Rod Nock? Spun Bearings? etc? I've run my car low on oil MANY times. I've even overheated the darned thing on a couple of occasions. My Supra still runs like a CHAMP! In fact, my experience with the Supra has led to some of my friends making interesting purchases. One friend picked up a 91 Supra - unfortunately it was not as reliable as mine. Another friend got a 3000GT VR4 and had LOTS of fun with it for a few years - before trading it in on a family truck. Do the regular maintenance BEFORE doing any modifications! And then, when you do your modifications, DON'T cut corners. Do things the best possible way and you will be amazed at how reliable and FUN a Supra can be. |
