Question 1991 corolla slugish

My 1991 corolla, automatic is acting up now for a few months. I havent driven it a lot lately because i dont know what is wrong. You give it gas and it will hesitate then go and keep doing it... looses power, then gains it, looses it...... could it be just a bad spark plug, or maybe my belt is slipping. But it runs really bad. it almost runs better when you get to a certain speed and not give it a lot of gas. Anyone have this problem? The car only has 175,000 miles on it. My in-laws just said to junk it.. But i think its still a good car. Help my prove them wrong. Thanks

I actually had this problem, I dont think it was quite to this extent. It seemed like when I accelerated it would almost stall, just cut out almost. After a few seconds it would kick back in and be fine until I came to a stop. I cant really help you too much because my problem seemed to fix itself. I replaced my manifold, downpipe, and timing belt and I never came across this problem again, but I dont know if this was related. A friend of mine told me I needed to replace something, but I dont remember, if you still need help, I can probably ask him again if you like but it'll take a while.

IF you wouldnt mind asking him if it wasnt too much to ask. Im going to go through and change all my plugs and wires in a few day to see if that helps. I was too homing that it would just work its way out, but it keeps getting worse. At first it just did it a few times, but now it does it nonstop.

Mine does the same thing. However, it overheated to the point that the manifold turned firecracker red. Maybe the manifold has a crack in it? let me know. I can get another manifold from the junkyard if that is the problem. These are goosd little cars and I like mine!

Thats quite a reasonable explanation, my manifold had a hole in the gasket, I got a new gasket and had to sand down my manifold to fix it, and now that I think about ti that was about the same time as the stall thing. One way or the other you should replace your manifold, so why not try that and get back to us. The person I was talking about isn't replying to their e-mails, so I cant find out what he was talking about.

Re: 1991 corolla slugish

Were you able to fix this problem? I'm having the same type of issues with my 91 afe corolla. allthough, mine seems to only do it first thing in the morning. I start it, and it stalls out a few times, before it will stay running, if you press the gas, it tries to die out, but finally revs up. Until the engine warms up some, it keeps doing this to me.

I was unable to fix this problem. It seems to do it more when it is wet outside, or was the day before, which leads me to believe that it is distributer, but since our model of corolla has the cap and cables attached as one I have it on back order, I'll let you know how it turns out.

well, I was able to fix my problem that was similar to yours. However, my check engine light was on, and flashing code 22 (coolant temperature sensor) Upon inspecting the coolant temperature sensor, the two wires leading into the plug for it, were exposed and touching. I seperated the two wires, and coated them in liquid electrical tape, and replaced the sensor, now it runs just fine again. Don't know if that's your problem or not. I paid $25 for the sensor for my car through Auto Zone.
