B2200 FI Engine
I have a 1990 B2200 with a blown head gasket. I have an estimate to replace it for $700 up to over $1,000 if the head is warped. If I am going to spend that kind of money, I probably should get the engine rebuilt. since it has about 105k miles on it and is buring some oil..and this is where my questions come in.
My truck has the 2.2L L4 FI Engine. Checking online I see many FE engines. What is the difference? Are they ineterchangeable? A local machine shop I checked with will not touch this engine saying they are difficult to work on. Might it be better to find a rebuilt or used imported Japanese replacement engine or does the cost of shipping cancel out any savings vs. having the existing engine worked on (if I can find a shop that will do it). Any information would be appreciated. |

Just pull the motor and open it up.
They are very easy to work on. If it smokes, you need a ring job. At 105k miles, your crank main and rod bearing should be ok but I would change them anyway since it is open already. Check the head surface for warpage by using a straight edge. If it's warped, buy a rebuilt head for $275 on ebay. I dont like buying used because you don't know what you are getting. I saw on ebay that you can buy the rebuild kit for $300, includes pistons, rings, main and rod brgs, oil pump and timing belt, etc. |
