Wipers not working

I just replaced my windshield wiper motor, but they are still stuck in a vertical position when they are turned off. I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. Could someone please help me!

just keep your wipers on low.

AlldataDIY.com has a diagnostic chart for this condition and it seems like a short.

I can't turn my wipers off or else they go vertical also. Been that way for a year. Keep a spare set of wiper blades in the trunk.

According to my factory manual the wiper motor park operation is controlled by the wiper motor module (cover). When you replaced your wiper motor did you use the old cover or did the motor come with a new cover?

If you pull the wipers and the cover on drivers side, getting down to the motor, look where the arm hooks onto the motor. Down below the unit the arm connects to, look to the bottom and see if you can find a tab that is in a bracket and pry outward. When you cycle the wipers and turn off, this tab hits a piece of metal bent up and changes the directionto the transmission and staps in the right position. This happened to me when too much snow was on windshield a couple years ago and just found it.

My car has been doing this for 1 1/2 years. And it doesn't take much force for it to happen. There was no snow, but the wipers were frosted to the glass when mine went. The event was barely noticeable and the wipers did break loose . I always thought it was a short condition -but I am wrong. In a few weeks I'll start digging around the wiper chassis to find this fault. 6 more months and the car is paid off. 2000 Intrigue.

The condition would be called "wipers that won't park".

I looked into this today. I got down to the wiper motor after drilling out the plastic expansion screws (drill into them and pull out, philips head plastic expansion screws like they use in concrete) that hold the 2 plastic forms covering the wiper assembly and interior air filter (and fan). I couldn't find the tab that you were alluding to. I couldn't figure out why it would work this way.

This diagram explains the location of the tab. There is a TSB of 02-08-43-002 on the problem and others (05-08-43-003A). No TSB for the Intrigue.

After you have the wiper motor area open, turn on the wipers and watch the unit cycle, especially through the turning the switch to off position. The tab is on the transmission area closes to the front of the vehicle and the arms are on the other side. The tab hits another metal tab at the 5 o'clock location. But if this tab is pushed inward, it will not hit on the other tab. Once you find this tab and take a screw driver to pry it outward. Cycle the wipers again and when turning them off again, the two tabs will make contact and it will change the direction of the wipers. If you get it to this stage, you are all set. If not, keep watching the cycle in the off position, that is the most important to watch so you can figure it out easier. You can ask a GM parts guy too from this point as well.

It takes about 10 small taps with a 10" forged flat-head screwdriver (and hammer) to get the tab pushed in. About 1 minute of work.

Do a few taps at a time then turn the wipers on then off and see if there is engagement. If not do a few more taps and retry.

Now I need to go to GM and purchase some of those plastic fasteners that I drilled out and a new passenger air filter. Then I will put the wipers back on the bolts seemed to be (lock-tighted blue) also.

July 6th:
I put everything back together and it seems to work. You may need some type of prybar (used a nail puller prybar) and a piece of metal (I used a large screwdriver and a piece of cardboard underneath) as a prying surface to get the wiperblades off.

The plastic fasteners are hard to get off because they are the expansion type. The screw must come out before the seat. Drilling into them and pulling out is the easiest way to remove them, but then you wreck the screw face somewhat. These will cost you 78 cents a piece at GM. The one with the flathead surface will actually screw out and is not an expansion screw. The white one on the wiper motor cover (underneath the wiper cover -3 covers total) will need to be pryed out because it's not an expansion screw.

2001 Buick Regal LS
This tip just saved me a trip to my service guy and basically paid for my internet service for the year(more or less)! I realize this post comes two years after the original post but I am very appreciative of this info and signed up on this forum just to post this and add my experience to the others.

I can report the same conditions. Problem developed after snow and ice built up under the hood lid. Wipers parked straight up.

I was able to do this all in one session. It took me 45 minutes including a run to the computer. All work was done under the hood, nothing inside the car.

Tools
I used a screw driver(small) to pry the center pin out of the two peice plastic panel retainer that holds the primary cover on over the motor assembly. Also removes the plastic cap which cover the nuts which retain wiper blade.

Vise grip(I know,I know) to take the nut off the wiper blade and to pull the wiper blade off the splined stud.

Large screw driver and hammer to tap tab back into position so the park sequence will occur.

Here is the dissembly sequence.

Pull hood to firewall rubber gasket.

Unclip washer fluid lines

Pry cover off nut which retains wiper blade and remove nut(driver wiper)

Remove driver side wiper from its splined stud

Pry/pull center pin from plastic panel retainer pin, pry/pull plastic panel from panel, remove driver side panel cover(black plastic formed panel which covers wiper assembly, driver side only)

Pull white nylon retainer pin on a second plastic wiper cover and remove second wiper motor cover.

Pry round black cover off circular mechanism which which runs directly from wiper motor.

You can now see a tab on this mechanism which needs to contact another tab(mounted from car). If these tabs do not contact each other when the wipers are attempting to park the second tab must be bent back to the contact position. Like others have said, tap this tab toward the cener line of the car until it intersects the sweep of the round wiper motor mounted mechanism. My Regal had a small notch where they contacted each other. I went too far and had to tap the car mounted tab back a bit.

Assemble in reverse order and recieve no shop bill! This is a little hard to visualize so I hope this sheds a little more light for you if you're coming in cold.
