trans slipping?
hey guys,
I got a 2000 grand prix gt with just over 90K miles on it. Ever since I bought it I have had trans problems like hard shifting due to the pressure control solenoid. I solved that problem with an after market PCM, and it has been fine since then. But now I am having problems with the trans slipping... is there anything I can do before paying the money to have a new/used tranny put in? Im hoping for a cheaper way to fix this so any information would help me out a lot... and if not... does anyone have any information on a good place to shop for one? Thanks for the help!

Re: trans slipping?
How do you know it is not a line pressure/PCS issue? Did you get it scanned for the infamous P1811 DTC or other slippage codes? It sounds like the PCM module was a bandaid fix or the aggressive shift programming may have caused internal damage like to the clutch packs.
When was the last transaxle service. ATF and screen filter?

Re: trans slipping?
yes that is the PCM i got... it was an easy install. it is located inside of the factory air box. simply remove the front half of the air box disconnect the old PCM and plug the new one in... that simple... some of the GPs you have to reset the security system... i didnt even have to do that with mine.
about the trans service... im not to sure when the last one was... i bought the car with 60K on it from the dealership about 2 years ago, and the fluid was in good shape when i checked it (not burnt, not gritty, etc) the fluid actually looked new, but ever since i had it from there i had that hard shifting cause by the Pressure Control Solenoid, or im assuming anyway given that there were no codes thrown. From what i can tell, that is a fairly common issue in these trannys. That solenoid wears a groove and gets stuck causing full line pressure all of the time. I was actually reluctant in buying the PCM given that it did increase line pressure in the trans but it actually stopped the hard shifting completely. i am fairly hard on the car from time to time and it just recently started to have the slipping problem. I dont think the whole tranny is trash, it still shifts fine even though its just a matter of time before that solenoid starts acting up again, but if i can get a few more years out of the car... thatd be great. so im pricing out transmissions and torque contertors and its looking costly. if anyone has any advice of things i could try before that, please let me know. thanks alot

Re: trans slipping?
IMO you are speculating or making too many invalid assumptions. Number 1 - It doesn't hurt to get it scanned. Number 2 - do not assume the dealership changed the ATF and installed a new screen filter back at 60K miles. Check the service records. Try the easy possible fixes or cost effective first.
As far as a last ditch effort before spending the big bucks on transaxle repair checkout the link below located at our Tips & Maintenance subforum. Not all hard/harsh shifting issues are the PCS solenoid. I do not particularly care for the ZZP PCM module since the transmission programming is too radical which may cause internal tranny wear. I have used the DHP in the past and presently I have an Intense custom programmed. Click here

Re: trans slipping?
Understandable... i wasnt so much making assumptions.. i wasnt saying the dealership did the service on it, i was just saying the fluid was clean, which again, doesnt mean anything and to be completely honest i wasnt sure what was causing the hard shifting. i was basically just guessing based on all of the symptoms and other posts and research, and i would agree with you with the programming of the ZZ PCM is prolly not the best. I was simply saying it fixed that particular problem presently not to say it isnt still there. You put it well earlier by saying it was like a bandaid...
But that isnt the problem at hand for me right now... i would just like to see what my other options are as far as resolving the slipping in my transmission.. ill check out that link.
