Service Engine Soon light

What are your thoughts on this:

The ''Service Engine Soon'' light came on for a couple of days on my 2001 Pontiac Montana. The vehicle was running fine. I brought it to the dealer and the code was cleared. Here is what dealer wrote on work order:

"Found Code 1404 EGR stored. Checked and found updated program for PCM. Reprogrammed and re-checked for codes."

I was charged 1 hour labor at $ 93.45. Ligt is now off. Does this diagnosis/fix sound right to you?

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Service Engine Soon light

MarkNYC, I posted a response to this in another thread (EGR Valve.) Another thing I thought of after posting that was on my '97 Venture a similar thing happened to me. My Service Engine Soon light came on and I took it to Autozone. They pulled a code, (can't remember the exact number,) and said it was related to the EGR valve. He told me that sometimes carbon builds up in the passageways and causes the Egr to not function properly, thus triggering the code. He said the first thing to try is to run some fuel injector cleaner in the tank. The second thing I could do was to remove the valve and spray carb cleaner into the passageways and reinstall. The third option was reccomended by some of his regular customers who took their vehicles to the local Valvoline instant oil change place for a fuel system cleaning. (This option is about $30 cheaper than replacing the EGR by yourself,) so I would weigh the options of a fuel system cleaning and if it would work versus the replacement by doing it yourself. I ended up using the injector cleaner and it seemed to do the trick.
