port and polish is done to the head of the engine and makes the intake and exhaust ports larger so that more air can get cramed in the cylinder. Now it's more complicated than it appears because they help airflow and everythign so it's not just like make the port larger and go, it's complicated but i don't know all that much sorry.

porting is taking the gaskets for the exhuast and intake manifold and opening up the ports on both sides to match up to the gaskets...
polishing is smothing out the rough egdes on the ports so the air can flow better

contrary to popular belief, it will not help your engine to make the intake / exhaust manifolds be the same size as the ports on the engine. you want them to be stepped both ways to help reversion and scavenging. you want the intake manifold to be smaller than the intake port and the exhaust manifold to be larger than the exhaust port.
the areas that would benefit from a port are quench areas where the ports get too small, or porting the manifold themselves such as when u use a bigger throttle body. There are many misconceptions to port & polish. Even though you can help out a little by smoothing the rough edges, generally porting a honda head should be left to individuals with a flow bench which can determine if you are actually makin the flow rate better, or just enlarging the ports which can bring the velocity of airflow down. |
