Does anyone have a pic of this?
This may be in bad taste, but I'm looking for a pic of the comprehensive engine exploson that I believe took place at the end of the Mulsanne during the 1997 24h of Le Mans. From what I've been able to determine, it was chassis #025R, running as Gulf Team Davidorff #39 during the race. I remember watching it live and being amazed at how much air had to be going through the rear brakes to shoot flames out that far, and is a great visual for how much cooling these cars really have.
Thanks EDIT: This car did race again, it never hit anything, just blew the engine. I can symapthise with the engine blowup being a bad thing (check out my cars), in this case there is a lot to be learned from the pic about the extraordinary aerodynamics of the F1 Last edited by kfoote; 04-23-2003 at 02:52 PM. |

One flaming F1 GTR coming right up...
Surprisingly - this is the only picture I have seen of the car in flames... >8^) ER |

And here's the aftermath photo - I believe a version of this shot is available at WreckedExotics.com
Also, I don't believe that GTR #25R ever did race again. At least not in 1997 and not with the Gulf-Davidoff team. It may have been repaired later by the factory and raced by another team - possibly in the British GT series, but as you can see from this overhead shot, the fire did extensive damage to the vehicle. >8^) ER |

One last photo - there's not a lot of detail, but it's a very rare shot that I doubt many have seen and some may wish to add to their photo collections...
Draped with a tarp - as if it were a dead body - the car is pushed back to the garage area... My apologies to those who may be upset by the images I post. No one likes looking at this stuff, but the images do have some historical significance.>8^) ER |

It will take a bit more research to be sure - I know that I have all the info to determine it, I just need to parse through it and find the exact race that it occurred at. >8^) ER |

Thanks for the research, that is the aftermath of what I remember seeing, though I guess a pic of the car while it was still rolling may not exist. I also apologize for misrepresenting the race history of this chassis, this was the last race it ran. After further research I discovered thet the 3 races it ran in the 1997 FIA GT Championship were all before LeMans. Here's the race history I have found for chassis 25R.
Gulf Team Davidoff, 1997 Le Mans 24 Hours: DNF (Bellm/Gilbert-Scott/Sekiya). 1997 FIA GT Championship: Hockenheim DNF (Bellm/Gilbert-Scott), Silverstone 4th (Bellm/Gilbert-Scott/Raphanel), Helsinki 4th (Bellm/Gilbert-Scott/Raphanel). |

J/KOk, I'll post the battered photo of it, and i'll also include this car's race history from the 1998 FIA GT series and 24Hrs of LeMans, that way everyone can learn something as well. 1998 FIA GT Championship #15 GTC/Team Davidoff - McLaren F1 GTR #22R - driven by Thomas Bscher/Geoff Lees Rd 1 - 4/12/98 - 500 km Oschersleben - DNF - retired after 77 laps - no reason given Rd 2 - 5/17/98 - 500 km Silverstone - 6th place finish Rd 3 - 6/28/98 - 500 km Hockenheim - 5th place finish Rd 4 - 7/12/98 - 500 km Dijon - Did not compete Rd 5 - 7/19/98 - 500 km Hungaroring - retired after 68 laps - Fuel pump failure Rd 6 - 8/23/98 - 1000 km Suzuka - DNF - retired after 106 laps - no reason given Rd 7 - 9/06/98 - 500 km Donington Park - 7th place finish Rd 8 - 9/20/98 - 500 km A-1 Ring - 6th place finish Rd 9 - 10/18/98 - 500 km Homestead, FL - Did not compete Rd 10 - 10/25/98 500 km Laguna Seca, CA - Did not compete 1998 24 Hrs of Le Mans #41 Gulf/Team Davidoff/Loctite - McLaren F1 GTR #22R - driven by Thomas Bscher/Emanuele Pirro/Rinaldo Capello 6/7/98 - DNF - retired after 228 laps - accident Now - even though the Le Mans race is the only one that I can confirm the car retired from due to an accident, there's no way that this photo is from that race. It has to be from one of the two FIA GT races where the car DNF based on the livery and race number. I'm nearly positive that it was the first race of the season at Oschersleben, but I'll do some more research and see if I can confirm that. >8^) ER BTW - OUCH!!

At least most of the wrecked McLarens you see have been wrecked in races and not by some rich idiot who can't drive. It is still so sad though.
