Question about 89 Supra Turbo

Hey, I presently drive a 97 nissan maxima se 5 speed and was looking for a project car. The supras sure are nice 94+ but i just dont have that kind of cash. I would like to know any thoughts and opinions on a 1989 Toyota Supra manual speed with turbo. Would this be a worthy car to mod ? I know very little about the supra but thought that this car would quite possibly be faster than my Nissan Maxima SE which is a 5 speed with aftermarket intake, y and b pipes and aftermarket muffler. I just did not want to get into a project on a car thats about the same speed as mine. Is a Supra turbo 89-91 a much faster car than the max .. thanks for your time ...

You have to look at it like this... 1. do you know how to work on cars?. Because if you don't know to very much you might be in a sort of a bind. The older turbo supras had a sort of a head gasket problem most likely related to compression from the turbo. If you can replace the gasket yourself you are pretty much set, if not you might be about $2500 in the hole due to labor cost to replace the $20 gasket. The cars have about 230 hp and are rear-wheel drive (a major plus, no blowing out crappy rebuilt cv joints-axels) 2. If you've got the money to blow you can really fix the cars up to look and perform amazing. For about $800 you can make the front look much meaner and you can get cold air intakes that really beef up hp . and 3. If you don't let the turbo cool down after driving (even regular driving) you take the chance of ruining the turbo by overheating it.

I would but one. I have an 1988 Supra with close to 400 RWHp. Watch out for the head gasket. That is about the main problem with them. There worth it for the price and the horse power you can get. Go to
http://www.jblmk3.com/ I based some of my parts on his site.

My mods are
K&N FI Pk
HKS blowoff valve
Magna spark plug wires
550cc Injectors (might go to 7200cc)
60-1 wheel turbo upgrade ( I might go to a T04E turbo)
Turbo elbow
Spearco Innercooler
Hks exhaust & test pipe and Down pipe
No cats
Exaust cut-off for open headers
fuel pump and manual pressure regulator
Lexus/REMI air fuel management system
Clutch Master stage 3
Fluidine radiator
Greddy boost controler
Gauges to monitor everything
HKS MHG
