exact

hey
i think i can give you an exact amount
5 prototypes were used to develop the F1
there are 64 standard regular F1 cars
then they created 9 GTR race cars in the 95 spec
to celebrate the victory @ le mans in 95 they created the LM, five of those were made and a protoype, so actually 6
they again made 9 new GTR cars but this time 96 spec
then they created 10 GTR cars in 97 spec, these were GT1 cars, they raced in that class @ le mans. in 1997 there wasn't a spectucular result, but in 1998 steve o'rourke placed fourth in a 1997 GTR (saw that car for real, stickers still on, it's for sale @ http://www.taylorandcrawley.com/ )
to homologate for the GT1 class, at least one street version had to be made, the GT, they made one protoype, theXP GT and 2 production cars, so 3 GT's. they also made a spare chassis which, for as far as we know it, still resides in the factory in woking. But recently from spare parts a 11th GTR car was made for the JGTC, known as the hitotsuyama car.
But tot make a long story a bit shorter:
5 XP's (XP1, XP2, XP3, XP4, XP5)
64 F1's
1 XP LM
5 LM's
1 XP GT
2 GT's
9 GTR 95
9 GTR 96
10 GTR 97
that's a total of 106 cars.
and the hitotsuyama and the spare chassis make up to 107 cars + a chassis

so now you know it

Can anyone confirm if the Hitotsutyama car was created using the spare chassis? I find it hard to believe they were able to build a complete car using spare parts without utilizing the spare chassis.

yeah, they still had the spare chassis last summer, so i am sure that the race car was not built with that one...

How?

How do you build a car with a carbon ibre monococque, without the monococque?
XOTech wat do you know about this car?
And since McLaren aggresively prosecutes anyone that wil violate their copyrights or trademarks, what did they do about this car, or was it made in Woking?
Man, this car's a mistery!

monococque refers to the central cylindrical unit of F1-type cars. McLaren F1 has more of a space frame bonded to the chassis tub.

the parts for this racecar were supplied by the factory with their full support.

don't worry, be happy :-)

wrong

faisal

are you saying that everything that said things like
"the car with the first full carbon fibre monococque"
is wrong?
I highly doubt it
but since you've been in the factory and i haven't, you might be right.
but can you send post on this forum a picture of a real monococque and the McLaren chassis, so everybody knows what's difference
i'm sorry but i'd like to sort this out for good so i'll never be worng again
thanks

Re: wrong

monocoque simply means "single shell" and has been used to imply different things. it's easy to see a monocoque construction in a formula 1 car because it is basically a single cylindrical shape, with the suspension hung from it (note that the nose cone is a separate piece). in a road car with covered wheels, it gets a little fuzzy.

if mclaren choose to call it a monocoque, then fine, it's a monococque. in engineering circles, the carbon fibre tub with roof enclosure is also referred to as a space frame ie. if you put in the glass peices in the cutouts for the windows, then it defines a space that is bound by the framework of carbon fibre panels and pillars.

another way to distinguish it which is more important from an engineering point of view is that it started off as a tub, and the top (roof and pillars) are bonded on to it. from this perspective, it is not a monocoque, although I am sure that the resin and bonding process they used resulted in a bond that is as strong as a single continuous piece of prepreg carbon fibre, so once it is finished and becomes one big piece, it can be referred to as a monocoque.

another definition of monocoque is "stressed skin" meaning that the surface is molded to define the shape and there is no bracing. carbon fibre is great for creating complex shapes and once the prepreg hardens, there is no need for internal bracing. by this definition, since the entire shape of the mclaren car is due to the carbon fibre pieces, it is a monocoque construction.

with carbon fibre, no matter how it's put together, most people call it monococque, whether or not it has bracing and whether or not it is a single central structure.

there is no right or wrong way to refer to it, really, but it is not a monococque in the true sense of the word if you are talking about a single shell, and it is definitely a monocoque if you are talking about stressed skin.

i can't be bothered to diagram it or find pics. is this not clear enough?

I don't know if this can help but :

If you have the film of the BBC (top gear), you can see the part faisalkhan refers to (roof and pillars).

Two poeple take away this part from a furnace.

no, that's a mockup to test out the interior designs, door mechanism, etc. they had several, one of which is still used to customize the seats and pedal assembly for each customer.

I do have the book and don't fear the copyrights, but sadly I am lacking in the scanner dept...

I'm working on getting one, but can't provide anything immediately. I'll look through the book and see if there are any good shots of what you guys are discussing and if I can take a decent digital photo of any of it, I will try that.

faisalkhan - Did you see the spare chassis when you were there? Was it under one of the tarps in that storage room? Also, did you see if the Clinic Model was still there? Possibly under another tarp? Lastly, was GTR #01R - the '95 Ueno Clinic-sponsored LeMans winner there as well or do they keep that car in a seperate location?

Thanks in advance for whatever you might be able to confirm.
