Crankwalk and such...

Hey,

I don't know much about DSM's but both my friend and I are looking for new cars once we head to college. I'm selling my 2002 Celica , and he has 10K in an account. So we're both looking for cars in that range (im gonna mod it(the celicas paid off so all the money goes into my new car) he's not) We've been looking at most sport compacts. We both are in love with the later model GSR Integras (I had a 2ng gen as my first car, and my dad had a GSR when I was younger) However I'm planning on boosting if I go that way, and then I thought why not just buy a DSM? After looking around and talking to some guys it seems to keep coming up that the later model GSX and GST suffer from crankwalk. Now this isnt cool, I actually got to see one guys engine that was rebuilt, and the pics before the rebuild (he blew out the side of his block from it!) Now this hardly seems like a good idea. But I see so many modded DSMs that I must be missing something. Its my understanding that by rebuilding the later model engine with some stuff off the 1st gen engines you can have a very bullet proof engine. Is this true?

What kind of milage can I expect a GSX engine to live for? I know if I keep it taken care of and all that sure it will last, but I am buying used obviously, so I dont know what the previous person did to it. How common is this crankwalk, and what can anyone tell me about it?

crankwalk is most common in 95-99 DSM Turbos. when u go to buy one, Check for play in the turbine shaft in the turbo. At least do a leak down test and compression check. When you test drive it. While making a left turn and the clutch is in make sure that it doesnt stick to the floor, if it does that is a sign of crankwalk. if the car gets crankwalk it will prolly be around 100k miles, but it has happened to people ALOT sooner. u could always buy a 1gen gsx or just swap in a 1gen turbo engine or even a evo 8 engine

Crankwalk is basically when the crankshaft (what connects the engine to the flywheel) walks/moves which may cause the rods to bend and damage pistons. Then you can say bye bye engine. The n/a guys dont have to worry about because they have a neon engine. The year with that has the most cases of CW is 1997. With 1995 and 1999 cars having the least amount of cases.you can never 100% get rid of crankwalk. But a 6-bolt engine from a 90 to early 92-motor has a drastically less chance of getting crankwalk than a 2G motor

ummm...I hope you know that the Evo 8 has the same 7bolt that the 2nd gens have. They have been known to crank walk as well. This is a fact.
