Question Just Muffler?

Hi,

I have a 1990 Honda Civic LX 4 door.
I was wondering what size the stock pipe is for the muffler?
Also, since i really cant afford a whole cat-back system just yet I was thinking of buying a good muffler for the time being and just having it welded on.
What muffler would u suggest thats loud but sounds mellow?
Also what kinda hp gains will i see with just a new muffler replacing the stock one?

Thanks,
Owen

2 things to mention, its pointless getting a muffler put on, it does not help unless you enlarge the size of your piping...so its a waste of money. You also mention that you want it mellow but loud? you got two contradicory things heh id recommend buying a muffler for now and wait till you can afford the piping

i'm with tkb. i guess you can pick up a borla muffler. As for mellow but loud greddy maybe or i heard a thermal today couldn't hear it till it got stomped on and he had headers. Keep away from the APEXI N1 if you want quiet lol.

Ok thanks for the info.
I really dont care about hp right now.
I just kinda want a nmice sounding muffler.
My friend got a Apexi N1 muffler for his 01' Nissan Sentra Se-r and it sounds good.
Would I at least get maybe 1-2 hp difference from the stock muffler?
cause the stock muffler restricts it right?
Also what size aftermarket muffler do I need to have welded on?
2.25"?

thanks,
Owen

My good friend has an apex-i and it sounds real nice.loud too, but a nice low, almost raspy sound. dont expect to see any horsepower gain from a muffler alone. maybe .05 hp. anyways for a stock motor id say get 2-2.5 inch piping. any bigger will do more harm than good.
