1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
I recently went through a section of bad Highway with my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when I hit a couple of abrasions in the road at about 55 MPH and went on to smooth Blacktop my Jeep continued to jolt like I had a flat tire. I slowed down to 40 MPH and the vibration stopped and I was able to continue down the road. I figured this was a sign that my shocks were warn out so I replaced them all. Now again today I had this same thing so it wasn’t the shocks. Has anyone any idea what I need to look at next?
Thanks |

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
Is it on one wheel in particular or more than one? Did you check coil springs while replacing shocks? You may have one broken. If coils are OK and if you suspect one wheel, rotate wheel with another one to see if problem remains or follow. You may have lost a balance weight on the wheel. I may be wrong but that's where I would start.

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
I may take it into the tire shop and have them take a look down there. The springs are not broken. Thanks for your assistance! I will post the findings from the tire shop when I figure out what the heck is up.
Thanks, |

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
Check to see that the balancing weights are still on all 4 tires...

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
I had the same problem on my 93 Grand. I re-balanced all the tires and checked the wheels, had the front end completely rebuilt for a cost of over $800.00. Problem still happened, then I noticed a shock absorber lying sideways up front, It's a dampener. designed to absorb the shock between the wheels. I replaced it, problem GONE!!!!

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
When I replaced all of the shocks I tried to replace the steering stabilizer too but could not get it off to replace it. I will see if I can get the tire shop to replace it for me while I am having my tires checked.
Thanks, |

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
Okay, Here is the fix. I could not get the steering stabelizer off to replace it so the tire shop did it for me. It cost $85.00 and fixed the problem. They told me if that did not fix the problem the only other thing it could be is the "Track Bar" and they would be happy to fix that for about $200.00. So if it is not one it's the other.
Thanks all for helping me figure out the problem! |

Re: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Suspension Question.
YW. I learned from experience on that issue. My alignment man had replaced the entire front end to no avail. Then the tire shop rebalanced all the tires dynamically, (as opposed to statically), and replaced all the rotors etc. Still had the problem. So when I replaced the stabilizer, BINGO!.
