smoking thoughts

Is contemporary society so devoid of good manners that we need legislation to tell us not to light up where we may cause offence?

What are your thoughts on smoking and the legislation that now dogs it at every turn?

I feel that it can possibly help areas be a bit cleaner in that where once someone could smoke now they must instead go outside to a designated area. Think of it this way. If you were enjoying a meal would you want to smell the odiforous scent of tobacco smoke whilest you dined? I do enjoy a good cigar every now and then, but I do it away from people who might be bothered by the smoke that I would cause.

This is an interesting topic .
I believe in america it is forbidden to smoke cigarettes in restaurants and bars (even on the street ?)

Is this info correct ?

I , for one am a smoking addict .

I like to smoke my smoke on a calm way, with friends, with a little Pint, chatting and stuff.

I do understand people dislike the smell of tobacco, which is understandable. I think America did a brave thing in daring to do what they did .
But I think to smoke should be a right. As I have been told , you have really nowhere to go to if you want one !

now, what's new here in Belgium are the non-smokers areas in restaurants and bars. They are now obliged to have them .
Which I think is good enough, Why forbid to smoke on the street, where a lot of fresh air is?

I have got a lack of knowledge about this in America , can somebody please explain this to me ?

It depends on the town/city as to if they allow smoking, The town I live in allows it at this time. There is to date no federal law prohibiting smoking in public places. That is left to the towns leaders to make those decisions

I have a simple solution: You light up in my face, I hit you in the face. It is disrespectful and rude.

While I do believe people have a right to smoke where they please, I do think it should be cut out in certain places.
Places where I think smoking should be allowed:
Bars
Clubs
Certain areas of restaurants
People where smoking should be banned:
I would rather a restaurant be smoke free but i can deal with smoking designated areas.
Places with lots of kids.

Ok, before I say this, I would just like to say Im not advocating smoking. Now, Pick, are you saying that in general if someone where to just light up a cigarette near you, you would hit them in the face? Because if that is the case, that pretty much makes you an asshole. Im sorry, but there really wasnt another way to put it. Unless it's otherwise stated in the area, someone can smoke if they like and for someone else to just come up to them and give them shit is also disrespectful. Now, if you meant, if someone gets right next to you and lights up, I understand what you are saying, but still violence is an ignorant way to resolve the situation. Ask them to not smoke around you, or move to another area.

I'm not trying to be an ass. I was spicing up the post with a little bit off ass-kicking humor. I have friends that smoke, and its perfectly fine with me, but I ask them not to light up around me, but htey usually don't anyway. A situation where I do kick ass is when somebody lights up in my car.

I don't see humor in violence.

If you don't want people to smoke in your car, that's your right, tell them about it.'Kicking ass' as you put it is a loser's solution to everything.

As most know, I enjoy a cigarette or 10, but am quitting fairly successfully. From a pack every 2 days to 2 or 3 cigarettes a week. I respect non-smokers rights by smoking away fromthem at outdoor locations that are obviously for that purpose because they have ashtrays or in SOME (only some in Australia) bars and pubs.

Absolutely. I completely understand peoples objections and am doing my best to quit ATM. Even at neutral public places like bus stops, I'll ask people sitting around me if they mind if I smoke.
