Don't you hate it when...

You're sanding down the body, getting it nice and smooth and JUST when you're about to put the compound on and get it looking nice...you sand through to the primer .

Ugh, this F40 has been a pain in the ass to build so far . I just can't wait to get it out of the way and move on to the F50.

Try clearcoating the model, so when you polish, you're not polishing the paint but the clearcoat instead, it's much better but you can still polish/sand through the paint so be careful. Correct me if I'm wrong about this info.

Im no expert either but it seems to me like a few extra coats of paint may help solve the problem in the future.

How many times have you repainted this one?

That idea was in my head, well in the back, and as soon as I saw that primer, I thought to myself "Why didn't you clearcoat first?!". I'm going to go buy some clear tomorrow (if they're open on Saturday this weekend) and add another coat or 2 of red, then 2 coats of clear and polish again.

This will be repaint #3. But when you haven't made a model for 5 years, and you are too much of a perfectionist, things like this happen .

I think you should wait about a month before you put a clear coat on. I thikn hte general rule is clearcoat RIGHT after yo spray the car or was 1-2 months then clearcoat. Agian, I'm not sure abot this info myself and would be glad if someone corrects me .

That's what I've read in a few different places too. So you have to spray clear while the paint is still wet from the last coat of colour? Doesn't this also mean you can only add 1 coat of clear too?

Gee us newbies ask alot of questions .

You really need to give the paint at least 4-5 weeks to let it GAS, as the paint is soft and needs time to harden before clearcoating

I knew it was at least a month, thanks.

What's your opinions on spraying clear while the last coat of colour is still wet? To me it almost seems like the paint would be more inclined to run, but seeing as I haven't done this before, my thought's are pretty much void .

I had a very long talk with the bloke who owns the model shop in town here about this last week...and to me this guy is GOD !!
The idea of leaving the paint to harden is because clearcoating will soften the colour paint and make it gas even more. This can then lead to the clear cracking or the paint staying to soft for weeks and weeks.
He showed me a few examples to back up his story

So it's definatly best to wait a month/couple of months before clearcoating then? I'm hoping modelcrafts and hobbies are open tomorrow morning so I can get some, although I think it might be better if I buy the clear in a month so I'm not tempted to use it too soon .

I feel your pain! The F40 has alot of edges to make it difficult polishing. I used to always wait til the color cured before I cleared, but the last two I built, the Orange Civic and the Exiv, I clear coated immediately after the color with three coats. No problems at all, it works great and cuts your building time tremendously. Both those cars were built in less than two weeks.

The primer sanded off on the front, where there's the lip on the hood. The only bad thing about the F40 is the sharp edges on it, making sanding quite hard in places.

With your last colour coat, do you make it thin to allow for the clear, so the two don't run? And doing it this way, you can only get 1 coat of clear, so I take it that's all you need?

I generally put 2 coats of primer, 2-3 coats of color, 3 coats of clear then polish. I mist coat the first coat of color then do 1-2 heavy coats or whatever is necessary to get even color saturation. 3 heavy coats of clear, with 8 to 10 minutes between all these various coats.

Brian,

Do you clear solid colours as well, not just metallics?

Yes, for polishing purposes mostly, but I also like the additional gloss.
