MrPbody

Hey remember I was telling you about the old GTO that my aunt had she's just letting rot away?
Well I'm trying to track down exactly what it is and what it's worth and hopefully I can talk her into selling it so it doesn't sit around and die.
Ok so it's a 1969 GTO convertible looks like it has an electric drop top, I whent to go take photos but the camera went dead.
It's intake has 2 ports that come off it and connect to the nostrils on the hood which I though might mean its a ram air but the heads have no numbers on the exhaust port I can't figure that out. It's an off white color with a black strip down the side black leather interior and I think it's a 3 speed auto tranny. I will post some photos later when my camera is charged but what should I look for to help identify it?
And what do you think it could be worth?

Re: MrPbody

Take the VIN and contact Pontiac Historic Services (a "google" will find them). For $40 or so, they send you a copy of the "build sheet", which details ALL the options applied to the car at the time it was assembled.

If it really is a Ram Air IV car, and a rag top to "boot", it's quite valuable. Even if it's Ram Air III (D-ports), it's STILL very rare and desired. Does it have factory air?

Re: MrPbody

True "Ram Air" heads have round exhaust ports, and the "722" ('69, "614" is the '70) will be on one of the END exhaust ports, rather than the center like the d-ports. The distance between the center exhaust bolts is either 3 3/4" for the d-ports or 5" for the round ports.

Re: MrPbody

Well, a picture IS worth a thousand words...

The engine in the car has "early" heads. The valve covers in the pic are for a 389. Those covers won't physically fit on a 400 without damage from the rockers. Defintiely NOT the original.

The air cleaner in the pic has "snorkels". It s not a "Ram Air' system.

Still not worthless, but not the "diamond in the rough".

The valve covers shown in the pics indicates a 389 head. Those covers won't fit a 400 (too "shallow"). Definitely NOT the original engine.

The car still isn't worthless, but not a Ram Air car.

Re: MrPbody

Wow, what a find. Around here, project like that disappeared decades ago. If you tried to sell that as-is around here (Toronto) you would have a parade of guys offering $15k for it.

It's definitely worth pursuing. So long as the floors and frame are not rusted-out it looks like a pretty straightforward project.

But it's obvious that MrPbody missed the most obvious defect......... the continental kit uses an old Toronado wheel which will not fit the GTO

BTW I like how all your old car photos (GTO, Caddy) have the same coffee cup in them (which is something I would do. )

Re: MrPbody

Lol yea I have the caddy on ebay now, my aunt was getting all nervous I kept looking at her GTO, but I told her if she didn't want me to keep trying to get her to sell it atleast get it in a garage.
It doesn't rain much out here so the gto should be perfectly fine the caddy is sitting on the ground and doesn't even have that bad of dmg to the floor pans it's also in the orchard though so it gets watered ><
We used to have allot more cars out here but I've got rid of some and my aunt let someone come take out like 10 50-late 60 model caddy's that were all in great shape for scrap yea not happy about that but I was gone or it woulda never happened.
Atm I just got rid of a series 1 land rover and what we still have is 2 mid 50's olds 88's with rockets 1 4dr, 1 2dr a 74 javilen fully loaded with a 360 the gto the caddy my 71 firebird my cousins 60 something cougar a vw van and a few shells of other misc crap and tons of engines.

Re: MrPbody

I tell you, I am living in completely the wrong place to find nice projects. Rain, snow, salt ruined all our old cars.
That sounds like a fine collection, and some nice projects still left.
