Painting Jigs

Does anyone have pics of a car body paint jig? What do you guys use to attach the car body to when you paint it? I'd guess you need something secure that the body won't fall off if you turn it upside down.

Also I hear some one mention that he hung the body upside down after painting to keep the dust off the freshly painted body. Anyone acutally do that? How do you keep the dust off?

Jig wise we use a coat hanger, bent int a shape suitable to secure wyatever body you are painting, and attatched with masking tape or blu tack.
As for dust, usually once you have sprayed the body, you are safe, as modern paints dry so quickly only anything landing in the first 30 seconds is going to be a problem!
If anything, holding the body upside down asks it to fall off!

So far, I've not taped the body to the rig. I just use the tension in the wire to push gently against the insides of the door panels. My NSX and my previous project, an MR2, were conveniently both mid-engined cars with large side-scoops to help hold the body in place. OTOH, I have put an S2000 body, an RX-7 body and an R32 Skyline body on the same rig, and they were reasonably secure.

As for dust, I do my spraying in a cardboard box on my porch. When I'm done with a coat, I put the lid on the box. So far, so good. Warren puts his in the microwave (not to cook) because that's the most dust-free spot in his house. My wife'd kill me if I tried that.

I use the wire as Jay said but attach it with tape as i've had one fall off just after painting it !!
I also attached it to a block of wood to add a bit of weight to it.

Thanks guys. I've been thinking about how I can start modeling again. My roommate is almost never home and should be traveling for work, so I'm going to ask to use his room (my desk ) and just close the door so the cats don't play with and eat my model compenents.

My cats like to knock models of the desk or off the windowsill. They also like to sit in and bite the box lids when I have them open. Strange animals...

Try to get some 3 mm isolated wire, then just fold a standard. After using it roll it back and next time make a new one, just to fit the next model.

Here a pic of my first model standard (didn't get the chacne to do anothger model, but very soon...) here i place the standard just inside between the front and rear and sits very thight, if I push the sidethings it will sit even tighter if possible :

The color I used here was Ferrari Red from Revell sprayed with an airbrush, first and last time I ever used an airbrush... Now into Spray cans.

As for the wire, just get 1 meter ,or something like that, that is strong enough and will stay the way how you bend it underneath the body. As long as you can bend it back to fit another model it should be fine. be sure to make a good standard for it, from wire or from a box so it will stay and not fall.

I have used wire stands in the past, at the moment I use two cassette cases (remember them, music came on the before the CD took over...). I superglued them in a T shape, so the cross piece goes inside the body and the down piece acts as a handle. It seems most car body are about the same width as a cassette case, so it's a nice tight fit.

What I have used a s long as I can remember is I take an old spray can with the lid on and wad up duct tape on top and shove it up under the roof of the car body. I like using the cans because they are round and easy to turn.

I use either 2l or 0.5l empty plastic coca cola bottles hilled with water
