Check Engine; How to Fetch Code?

1996 Cartier; Check Engine light came on. How do I read the Code for this without the OBDII Reader? Thanks.

Re: Check Engine; How to Fetch Code?

I would just take it to your local auto parts store and have them scan it for you.

Odd thing (to me) is that I just had the Oil changed and went through emissions testing and had the tags renewed and not more than 100 miles later the Check Engine light comes on. Car is still running beautifully and getting 30mpg highway so I can't imagine WTF is going on. I checked the Gas Cap; it's on and tight.

Re: Check Engine; How to Fetch Code?

Stopped in at my local Auto Parts Store (Baxters) and they read the code for me; PO420. So I said to the guy "my car must need a bong-hit' and it went completely over his head. He cleared it for me, it has not come back on. FYI - Code PO420 is for 'Catalytic Converter out of Efficiency Rating'.

I've only seen a bong in the movies, but at least know what one is. You are supposed to put your weed in to it, right. It would be interesting to see if the light comes back on again.

Were it mine, I would pull the elbow (4 -10mm bolts) right behind the throttle body, and clean all the carbon out of the horse shoe shaped passage molded into the intake manifold, that lets the egr gasses back into the intake. I got the same code, and that did the trick for me, on a 97TC with 185k miles.

My local auto parts store read mine & reset the CEL for free. I had a Code P0420, Cat not at peak performance. Since it was reset it has yet to throw the code again; 700 miles later.
