at a loss on my 95 civic ex
ive got a 95 civic ex with a d16z6. the car was my girlfriends and she let it sit for over a year after it stopped running on her. at first it wasnt getting any fire but i replaced the dizzy and got it to run, however very poorly. did a complete tune up on it,plugs, wires, fuel filter. it idles a little rough and has no acceleration even with the pedal all the way to the floor. after driving for a very short distance, maybe half a mile, the catalytic converter was glowing red. i replaced it thinking it might be clogged and choking the motor but it didnt help much. the coil and module are new as is the entire distributor. new cat appears to have gotten hot also after a few minutes of driving. any ideas on what might cause these issues?

not smoking from the tailpipe at all. only smoke ive seen was from underneath when the cat got red hot. i dont have a timing light and im scared to drive it 10 miles to a shop. i did put number one on tdc when i out the new dizzy in and the rotor lined up centered on the number one plug

Re: at a loss on my 95 civic ex
Something is causing raw unburned fuel to be sent down the exhaust pipe where the cat "burns" this fuel. The cat is designed to burn the tiny amount of unburned fuel that comes from a normal engine. Now, if you pour excessive hydrocarbons (fuel) in the exhaust, the cat will burn that too and since it's burning too much fuel it glows red hot. This won't last very long, this is very damaging to the cat. The catalyst can get hot enough to melt. And that won't take long! And when it melts, then you will have a blob of molten metal blocking the exhaust pipe (now it's clogged!) and the engine will stop operating. At that point, the only fix is replacement of the catalytic converter. |

Make sure the plugs are gaped correctly and are the correct type of plug, don't use bosch not that you do i'm just saying.also check your fuel regulator and the vacume line for it.

Re: at a loss on my 95 civic ex
Other problems could be a bad computer causing overly rich mixture, clogged fuel injectors, even bad /burnt valves and/or rings but heck lets not think about that.

new ngk plugs gapped at 1.1 mm. havent checked the regulator but i havent found any vacuum leaks. also im not getting a check engine light but do plan on checking codes tomorrow. could an 02 sensor cause some of the trouble? im not real familiar with hondas as im a nissan man.

Re: at a loss on my 95 civic ex
i was thinking the same thing. my truck is showing one bad but its not giving me any trouble. id just read that it could cause a headache. she was driving the car and said one day it started running rough and losing power power then completely dies on her. i suspected the coil and went on ahead and replaced the whole dizzy as i understand they are prone to failing. like i said that got it to start and run but didnt fix the whole problem. its only ran a total of maybe an hour and been driven 3 to 4 miles since it started again. does the computer need driving time before it will show a code?

Re: at a loss on my 95 civic ex
to be completely honest,by what i am hearing i think the car might have jumped timing and is causing it to run rich so the first thing i would do is get a timing light on it and see what it looks like before anything. The fact that the car stopped running on your girl friend and now the cats glowing i think a timing check is essential before going any futher.Do not drive the car though find someone who can come to you. Also you may be able to line up the marks on the cam and look at your mark on the crack shaft pully to check timing but not sure for this vehicle.

Re: at a loss on my 95 civic ex
definitely not driving it. not sure how bad the timing belt is on a honda but but i know the chain on my nissan motor wasnt too bad. but you are right it may have jumped a tooth. be better then valves or rings for sure
