Read my help page first in my sig.

But realistically you don't need any mods to get started in autocross. The best car to start with is actually a stock car on street tires. This is the best place to start learning cause you can hear and feel when the car is going to break loose or when you are pushing in turns. The tires will give you feed back letting you know when you have gone past the limits of your car.

Also something that I always mention is you can spend $1000 on a nice coilover system and maybe loose about .5-1 second on a 30 second course. Spend $225 on an Evolution School (http://www.autocross.com/evolution) or $50-100 on a Novice Autocross school and loose about 4-8 seconds. Why? The biggest mod you can do to your car is fix the nut behind the wheel. I even thought I was a good driver until I attended my first Evo school last year. I was placing 1-2nd place consistently. After attending the Evo school I dropped 2 seconds on the 30 second course! I would have never gained that much from any mod. Now I place 1st almost wherever I go

And now that I'm instructing I'm able to see what I used to do and help others fix their mistakes pretty quickly. I've had students usually placing last or next to last, who now place in the top 3

So save your money for seat time, a school, or just fun runs.

Well at this point right now don't worry about beating other people, but trying to decrease your times compared to other top drivers in your area.

When I first started I would look for the guys who always place 1st or 2nd in other classes. People who are consistently fast. When you get more and more seat time your times should consistently get closer to theirs (your time dropping in comparison).

And you know you are getting good when you can consistently place top 20 in PAX. Then top 10 in PAX. Then like me place 1st in PAX So far done that three times since last year.
