99 Contour-engine light on, stalling
I have a '99 Ford Contour SE (4-cylinder, 2.0 liter engine) with approx. 87,000 miles. Recently, the "Check engine" light started staying on, and approx. a week or two later the engine started very randomly cutting out while idling, driving, etc., after which it starts, and runs, fine. It's been doing this for several weeks now, and while the problem hasn't gotten any worse, nor has it improved. The Onboard Diagnostic (OBD) computer suggests that the engine is running lean. It's been suggested to me (by a Jiffy Lube oil change center) to have the fuel filter replaced and the fuel injectors thoroughly cleaned (for approx. $109), though I'm hesitant as to whether the problem could be something other, i.e. a defective sensor, fuel pump, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 99 Contour-engine light on, stalling
If you unplug the MAF sensor the computer will make the mixture rich by default. This doesn't mean the MAF is bad. More than likely the car has a vacuum leak which is causing the overly lean condition. Either that or it is starving for fuel which could be a result of a clogged fuel filter.
