A dist cap can have a crack in it causing it to arc or misfire and also the carbon button that the rotor rides on can wear out. Also the terminals on the inside will erode away with use.
The end of the rotor will also erode away with use and if there is a lot of black dust on top of it, it means it has wore away the carbon button on the dist cap. These are cheap enough items and if it has been a while since they were changed, they should be replaced as part of a complete tune-up..
