timing a corolla

So I went out and got a used head. The head gasket seemed to be fine. I have the old head out and am ready to put the new used one in. Can I get some info on how to do this so I don't have to take it apart cause I didn't time it right? Any info would be great. Its a 91 rolla 5 speed econo-box.

Re: timing a corolla

Have you had the new head checked? Just because the gasket looked fine doesn't mean that the "new" head doesn't have cracks or some warpage. You're looking at maybe $150 for a test, cut, and new valve seal installation. Money well spent for the piece of mind.

Make an account on autozone.com. They should have instructions for changing the head gasket.

Re: timing a corolla

I got it all put back together, new gasket, new head. I don't think its timed right. I set cylinder 1 on compression stroke, lined it up with the marks on the side of the engine. The intake cam shaft was just moving the "point" off the lifter so that the valve was just closing. The marks on the camshafts were lined up with each other. The only thing I may not have right is the distributor is turned all the way one way. The engine tries to start really fast so I guess I have it advanced. How do you know if your 180 degrees off vs a tooth or two off? Would having the timing advanced all the way cause it not to start at all?
