95 Camry Power Steering Tough

1995 Camry 167K miles. Since November my power steering has gotten progressive stickier. Right now, turning the wheel left or right at a turn is tough. When making a turn, initially there is significant resistance, but once I get far enough, there is no problem and it feels normal. After completing a turn, the wheel doesn't correct to straight as normal, but I have to give it some encouragement.

I thought it was due to the cold, but it's in the mid 50s now and no improvement.

I searched this forum and decided to flush/replace the power steering fluid with Dextron III using the link with all the nice pictures. This did not seem to help unfortunately. Turning isn't impossible, but I cant do it with 1 finger as before.

Any ideas?

Any noises while you're trying to turn the steering wheel? Groaning? Screeching? Does it steer easier if you turn the wheel slow versus fast?

Re: 95 Camry Power Steering Tough

No noises, screetching, or anything out of the ordinary. It seems to steer a bit easier when I turn it faster vs slower.

I added some Lucas stop leak power steering fluid to it. Man that stuff is thick. Seems to help a lot. I'll see how much better it is on the way home, but I can tell it's not normal.

Re: 95 Camry Power Steering Tough

I think it is fixed. Or at least, it is back to normal 1-finger turning.

A friend recommended I try using Lucas Oil power steering stop leak. Man that stuff is thick.

I drained the reservoir with a soap pump, and then poured the Lucas Oil product in. I then moved the wheel back and forth a few times - no real impact.

Then I drove to work (30 miles on the highway), and moved the wheels all the way left and all the way right 20 times. That seemed to fix it. Could be a leak sealed, or the detergent portion cleaning it out, or perhaps removing any air bubbles. Getting the liquid hot seemed to make a difference.

Re: 95 Camry Power Steering Tough

If it was my car, I would now remove the additive and replace it with ATF.
