96 Taurus Steering Gear

Just had the pump replaced for the second time in less than two years. Luckily the shop warranted this one. Was leaking again at the pump.

Here's the issue. It just doesnt have that feathery turn it use to have at very low speed. Seems to be about the same on faster turns. Also, hard turning (like in a parking lot at low speed) going nearly lock to lock still produces a whining noise.

We did attempt to bleed air from the system (jack up, wheel turn side to side about 50 times, etc), but the fluid never appears to be "airy". It does seem quite dirty.

Upon return to the shop he is now saying the steering gear is either clogged somewhat or failing.

Thoughts?

Re: 96 Taurus Steering Gear

What is being used as power steering fluid? I am not directly familiar with the 1996, but the slightly older Fords used automatic transmission fluid as power steering fluid. If it requires automatic transmission fluid and they are using conventional power steering fluid, which would be thinner than ATF, that could cause the problem(s) you are experiencing. That's my thought.

Re: 96 Taurus Steering Gear

I saw this thread because my sister in law has a '97 for which we just paid big bucks to replace the rack and pump (last year). I noted that they had put clear fluid in the pump and it looks like power steering stuff to me. She is now complaining that the steering is stiff in turns and I confirmed this this am by test driving it--and I also hear a slight whine (like the belt with it). I checked the book and sure enough it says "Mercon" for power steering. Will swap out and see what happens! I don't want to put anymore money into this Taurus right now!!
