96 T/C Keyless Remote

The range on my key fob sucks. I have replaced the batteries but still have to be within a foot of the vehicle to unlock the doors. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what could be the problem. I'd like to install an aftermarket kit but not sure where the OEM receiver is in the vehicle or what it looks like.
