1991 Honda Accord AT wont shift gears

I just bought a 1991 Accord DX, runs great has 163K on it, only problem, I have to shift gears manually, and feels like Im only getting 2nd and 3rd, it will shift down to second, but nothing lower, than once I get it goin, ill go into D3, shifts fine, then to D4 and nothing changes. I love the car, just don't know what the problem is. And the other thing, doesnt always start, it has a brand new battery, and the alternator is working fine, I rev up the car and the lights get brighter, low idle, everything is dim, bad wire somewhere? I can't find any clues. Any help would be great! Thank You!

Justin

What is your ATF level and what condition the fluid is?

For the electrical issues this is most likely a bad connection at the battery terminal or ground. Hard to find but still doable.

Good luck,

Sam

Re: 1991 Honda Accord AT wont shift gears

Its full, and all fluids were replaced 2 months ago, and it keeps idling funny just up and down, up and down, between 1000 and 2000 rpms. Checked all my fuses and relays to spot other problems, they are fine. Thank You, let me know if any one has any other suggestions

oh, and had bad terminals, replaced those, same problems, but starting better, think the battery needs to charge up.

Re: 1991 Honda Accord AT wont shift gears

So found my alternator is shot, getting a new one tomorrow, I've been reading online that transmission problems were coupled with a blinking S light, I hit sport and it doesn't even come on. Is it possible my light isn't working? I think its my TCM, I'm hoping so because I found that it probably just needs a capacitor, which I can easily replace, no need to spend hundreds on a new pile of silicone.
