Engine sounds like it's going up and down when in idle/park???

I have a 98 buick century custom. 197,000km

Sometimes when I start the car and let it run the engine sounds like it's going up and down. I don't know if surging is the word. It sounds as if someone is stepping on the gas and letting go over and over. I will drive it and then check it again and I don't hear it anymore. It's not always there but it's something I would like to look into. Once in awhile the Service engine light comes on but it does go off by itself.

Anyone know what this is?

How long since a tune-up? Have the trouble codes checked. Around here some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free.

Try cleaning or replacing the idle air control valve.

Also, check for vacuum leaks.
