Metal shavings in Power Steering Fluid
The power steering pump on my 1999 Audi A6 went out when I was approximately 200 miles from home. I called my mechanic and asked if I should drive the car home, have it fixed where I was, or have it towed (I have a premium AAA memebership and the tow would have been free)? He said that I should drive it back to home and bring it to their shop. I asked if there was any risk of further damaging the car by driving it home. He said no. Now it is in their shop and they are saying that because their are metal shavings in the power steering fluid the entire rack and pinion has to be replaced for $2000 more than just replacing the pump. My question is : Are the metal shavings a result of driving the car after the pump went out ? Thank you

It's probably just wear + tear, the fluid should of been changed a couple of X's over the years.
Consider flushing the rack a few X's, and go with a new pump.
