91 cavlier 2.2 fuel pump problem

Whats up everybody,
I have a 1991 Cavalier 4 door, with a 2.2L 4 cyc. fuel injected. It has around 240,000 miles on it. It turns over, but doesn't start. I checked the wires for a spark with a screwdriver, and i have fire. Problem is i don't hear the fuel pump switch on in the tank. I checked the fuse, it's good. My next attempt will be to check the relay with a tester, but my cheap light bulb tester isn't working. I'm pretty sure the fuel pump isn't working, but it's been sitting for quite awhile now. About 6 months, and before i moved it to where it is now, it was sitting for 2 years. And yes, it has 3 gallons of new gas in it. The gas gauge also doesn't work so I'm thinking the entire fuel pump assembly might have gone out.

It's been taken car of pretty well by an older gentleman who gave it to me, telling by the large folder full of reciepts from the mechanic. My question is, should i take it to a shop, have them drop the tank and replace the fuel pump assembly, or craigslist it, or skip all that and drop it off at the junkyard? It doesn't leak oil, and as far as the engine is concerned, it runs well. Thanks for your time.

The simplest way to check for power to the pump is right at the connector near the fuel tank. If there is power there than you have confirmed that the fuse/relay are working. If there is power have somebody turn the key to the crank position while you wack the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet. If it starts than its a pretty safe bet the fuel pump is bad. You can decide from there if it is worth replacing or not.
