2000 gp gtp power steering hose replacement
i once again need some wisdom from everyone here. 2000 gp gtp. two power steering hoses blew out and the mechanic wants 400 to replace them. i havent taken a good look due to the 2.5 feet of snow we just got, but i remember the power steering being in a real bad spot. something about $400 to change an $8 hose doesnt work for me. has anyone done this before and what would i be getting myself into? even better if anyone knows a link to the procedure. as always i appreciate everyones help

Re: 2000 gp gtp power steering hose replacement
I'll give your message a shot::
This is a messy job that takes me about an hour of easy going work. It assumes you are also replacing the unit because it was run dry several times due to the leaky p.s. lines. (Sticking my neck out on that last sentence.) Pop the hood and remove the drive belt. Loosen the lug nuts on the front passenger wheel of the car. Jack up and support the front right corner of the vehicle. DON'T forget your SAFETY jack-stands! Remove the wheel and plastic crankshaft shield. Messy time at this point. I'd suggest you get a lot of old rags and something to catch the P.S. fluid. Grab your line wrench and remove both the pressure and return lines from the pump. Put a little, NOT a lot of muscle to break the hose nuts loose. Last thing you want to do is strip 'em because you can't get the proper angle/bite on the nut(s). Crack the nuts, drain the unit and lines before removing the unit. Remove the mounting bolts. Scoootch the pump out. It takes patience. Remove the line's other ends, swap 'em with new ones, grab your new P.S. unit and re-install it in reverse order. Don't forget fresh power steering fluid for the job. An alternate messy method is remove the mounting bolts. Lower the unit down, cut the lines with dikes since you are replacing them. Remove the unit. Remove the lines on the rack and pinion unit that had been cut. Then re-install in reverse order from above. You can swap the lines with new ones with out having to remove the unit. What ever works best for you.
