Whats the best way to Launch?

Whats the best way to launch an automatic?? keep it in neutral then drop it to drive, or just go from a dead, slow roll start? :jumpie:

You can power brake or neutral drop. Both aren't good on the transission.

like Polygon said, neither are good, but if you're gonna do one I would "power brake". my one friend had a civic and he had only neutral slammed maybe 15 times, and one time i was with him when he did it and his transmission was ruined. i would just rev it up to like 2,000rpms with the brake on, otherwise you could causes some serious damage...

.

What exactly is power braking? I know its about braking and hitting the gas to rev it up but thats about it. Is it like trying to push the gas all the way down? I know I can rev the truck up to 1700, any further then that the tires will squeel and it slowly starts moving foward.

How big of a difference would there be to power braking vs. just starting from a dead stop, no revs on the engine? :jumpie:

Well "power breaking", I meant just revving up the engine while holding down the break...not literally spinning while you're stopped. I think it would help a little bit.

I've tried "power breaking" and it doesn't seem to improve your launch that much, I also tried droping from neutral, and that didn't really seem to help much as my tires just spun, The key is to start with the hightest RPMs possible spinning your wheels the least, whichever works the best for you.

Power braking, I call it brake standing. I just mash the brakes down, then, give it gas (With the traction control off, of course). Then, when the engine is at the desired rpms, and the torque converter is nicely loaded up, release the brake and go tearing away.
Some cars will start to spin their wheels even with the brakes on, but usually wont move because the other wheels are braking (especially true for rwd vehicles). For example, a taurus will not overpower the brakes, but a camaro will. It isnt *that* bad for the car, its alot better than going from neutral to first (because then the gears have to engage at high speeds, which can break things. With a brake stand, the gears are engaged, just, teh torque converter has to absorb to load. And a torque converter is much cheaper and sturdier than a transmission).

Re: Whats the best way to Launch?

I would never recamend going from Neutral into gear while your hitting the accelerator, but power braking is the only "good" way to get a better launch.
