Part 2:Changed my alternator, won't shift outta 1st
Related to this post...tried to edit title, but system refused to make the change.
I changed my alternator, and now I can shift outta first gear.(didn't notice at first, due to heavy snow fall) So I've lost both my ability to shift outta 1st, plus my speedometer no longer works. Both of which were fine before I changed alternator. They gotta be related.... Thanks |

Re: Part 2:Changed my alternator, won't shift outta 1st
I think you should return to the original thread and delete both posts to avoid duplication of replies. ...this thread alone will be OK from now on.
..If the shifting was purely electronic, I would say that loosing the speed signal prevents the transmision from knowing you are actually moving.......but i think there is a "hydraulic" logic that should work also...I'm not sure.... Physically, working around the alternator should not have impaired signals from transmission speed sensor; however, there is a large connector on passenger side suspension tower that carries everything to and from the computer....and it has happened wires were cut at that plug. You worked in that area. Pay attention. Have you made a voltage check since you changed the alternator?

Re: Part 2:Changed my alternator, won't shift outta 1st
Thanks for the response, and actually I did try to delete the first post but for the life of me figure out how to do it.
There were some wires and such moved, as I had to remove the entire assembly cuz I could not loosen the big bolt in back(job was done outside on a Montreal winter day). Indeed, there was a hose thing and a wire bunch attached to the assembly...could that lead to a computer...??? |

Nopes...don't seem to work on the first post.
Any idea where the computer that might affect the tranny might be located..?? |

Re: Part 2:Changed my alternator, won't shift outta 1st
ah ha.....at least until '93, the 3T40 that comes with the 3.1 is not computer controlled. ..I'd be surprised they changed that in '95 ...but I might be wrong. ... a vacuum modulator is used with the 3T40...disconnecting the vacuum line to the modulator (by accident) mimics full throttle and that could keep the tranny in 1st gear to quite high a speed..but it would probably shift to 2nd once at a high rpm anyway. WIll check trouble shooting in the TS service manual......and yes, the only external causes are modulator and throttle cable linkage to transmission..and they mention "delayed shift"...no straight hint for solid 1st gear only problem
Up to what speed did you try it ? ....another forum member like trannyman might help with this....

Quote:
but 4000 rpm should have shifted it even with the modulator screwed up. CHeck for any stray vacuum tubing, there are some of these hoses that run near the passenger side bulkhead to the heater controls ; one disconnected there could fool the vacuum to the modulator...better check for simple things first...that has no relation wth the speedometer though...check cirucit diagram here for speed indicator (based on '93) check fuses.... www.avigex.ca/xport/instrumentpanel.jpg.. www.avigex.ca/xport/speedsensor31.jpg.. THe speed buffer is behind glove compartment (above convenience center) www.avigex.ca/xport/convenience_center.jpg

Haven't tried putting it above 4000rpm, guess that's next. Gonna check those things you mention too, thanks.

Re: Part 2:Changed my alternator, won't shift outta 1st
Progress...found a cable that had been attached to back of alternator assembly, with an unplugged plug. So far, cannot see where to plug it back in....
