1999 Cherokee Front Brakes left & Right hand pads

I just did the brakes on my son-inl-aws 99 Cherokee. His rotors and pads were so bad on the dirver's side where I started, I could harly see what was left of his pads...I mean BAD! I ended up installing the RH side pads on the LH side...I didn't notice it until I finished up @ 11:30 last night that the Passenger side pads had a L stamped on each pad!

It seems to me that the pads fit okay on the wrong sides. It's just that the steel plate of the pad is not the same at both ends...One end only has sort of an ear. the other end has sort of two ears that together form a notch. Hope that makes sense,

Any I ended up installing both side with the notch end up, with the notch in the top caliper track ...and figuiring that if I swap 'em back...the the notch end will go down... I assume that the notch position up or down is the major concern? Otherwise the pads seemed to fit in okay...which I how I missed it.. Car seemed to brake just fine.

Is it dangerous as is? Could the pads some how slip out? Seems like the rotation of the wheel the notch at the bottom might hold the bottom of the pad tighter.

I will probably re-do them one way or another, But I'll do it ASAP if it's not safe. I called 2 dealerships and one guy said it wasn't a big deal, another guy said it might be.

Anybody else ever have any experience with this?

If I'm reading you right and getting the right mental image, the notch with the 2 tabs should have the bottom caliper slide bolt running through them to locate the pad and the single tab side sitting on top of the upper (forward most) slide caliper bolt and caliper casting.

The biggest potential problem I could see if the pads were indeed on the wrong side would be the position of the wear indicator.

I think you got the right image. These pads do not have a wear indicator someone else at a Dealership mentioned that..but these Wearever Gold Pads don't have a wear indicator.

I went and talked to the Manager at Advance Auto..he called over a guy who he said had several Certifications? The guy is a tech and told me that he had worked a local Jeep Dealership. We got another set of the pads out of stock and I showed him what all I was concerned with...He told me that it's not going to hurt anything, and if it was a nice day and I had some time...go ahead and switch 'em otherwise it's not a problem? He said that there was no way that the pads would be able to fallout...all of the alignment tabs etc. line up okay.

I still may switch 'em

Yeah, it's sounds like you're fine. I'm assuming the pad area is the same on all 4 pads?

Either way, no, they can not simply fall out.

Yes all 4 of the pads in terms of surface area & shape are the same..I remember now the tech said that the notch at the bottom was so that you could fit the bottoms in place and caliper arm forward and easily align the them in place. I told him I did that but I did it backwards..locked the top in..and sort of rolled the bottom into place.
