Exclamation Tranny Flush Question

Hi, my 97 TC has roughly 78,000 miles on it. I was wondering if I should be thinking about getting a tranny flush soon; I have heard that it should be done at about 80K. I have also heard that if there is no trouble with the tranny hard shifting, not to do anything(my tranny shifts ok). Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Tranny Flush Question

Well, both are right. I have always lived by the phrase if it aint broke then dont fix it. How ever, 78k is 78k. If your going to do it, I think Steven suggets that you drain the torque converter over a period of time. That way the trans can get use to it. In my case I flush every year and change the filter and gasket adding a bollt of Lucas. I also suggest Lucas for your situation.... Does the fluid look black and worn? Does it smell burnt?

No, it doesnt smell, or look burnt. I was just told that it is a good idea to consider changing the tranny fluid at 80k. I would take it to a shop to have it done; could I add the bottle of lucas after they flush, or should they put it in when they are doing it. Thanks.

Re: Tranny Flush Question

Check your owners manual, usually every 30,000 miles the fluid and filter should be replaced, more often if you tow with the vehicle. A good name brand of transmission fluid has all of the necessary additives in it and you shouldn't have to add any.

Re: Tranny Flush Question

I am not a big fan of the tranny flush because they do not directly clean-up the pan or filter.
The best service is to actually drain the fluid, remove the pan, clean it up inside and change the filter, and refill with fresh fluid.
I also believe this should be done more often than 80k miles.
