Unhappy 2001 kia fueling problem

Everytime I fuel fuel up my sportage I'm getting a blow back pressure out my fill line causing gas to spill out onto the suv and pavement. I have to slowly fill the tank to avoid this type of back pressure. It seems as though the tank doesn't have a pressure relieve valve to control air to gas ratio. Any sugesstions?

Sounds like the closed canister valve, it's filter or the line is plugged up. I'll look at work today and let ya know what to check when I get home. It should be an easy fix.

Re: 2001 kia fueling problem

Ok in the engine compartment is the charcoal canister. One of the hoses coming off of it should go into a solenoid that is attatched to or near the canister but not going to the engine in any way. Take the hose off of the canister that leads to that solenoid and blow air through it towards the solenoid. It should flow freely. If it doesn't check the hoses/solenoid for blockage. There might be a filter on the other end of the solenoid somewhere before it vents to the atmosphere so make sure to check that if it is there. If that is all clear and doesn't restrict airflow, blow air through the filler neck. Don't over do it, enough air to know it is blocked is more than enough. If you put too much pressure on the tank you can crack it or blow something out connected to the tank. Check the vapor line going from the gas tank to the charcoal canister while putting the tank under slight pressure until you find the restriction. More than likely you'll find the problem under the hood at the closed canister valve.

Re: 2001 kia fueling problem

..mmm....I do not know where you are with that problem, but all venting asccessories in the engine compartment are related to the clean operation of the engine, not the filling of the tank. As fuel enters, air must go out at same rate; the length and diameter of this long piping cannot exit the air at the rate of the filling up of the tank. There is a larger air exit pipe that goes up from the tank www.avigex.ca/kia/toplines.jpg to the side of the fill up hole and that should vent the air that is expulsed by entering fuel. It can be blocked. Check from under the car for pinching , corking of piping .

In any case, if the delivery rate of entering fuel exceeds a certain value, exiting air through dedicated piping will not be able to cope and will use more of the alternate issue, that is, up the main fill up pipe. Service station pumps are supposed to be blocked at a certain rate but there might be exceptions.
I'm just about (that is when outside temperature goes up and becomes adapted to human life) to investigate a similar issue with my son's Grand Prix, really annoying, takes minutes to fill up. Causes might be similar..will report.
