1997 Suburban Transfer Case Shifting Issues

When I push either the 4 hi or 4 low buttons the transfer case tries to shift but immediately shifts back into 2 hi. I have changed the shift motor but it continues to do the same thing. Any ideas?

Re: 1997 Suburban Transfer Case Shifting Issues

I have a similar issue on my '97.
None of the little yellow lights are on. The truck is in 2wd, and will shift into 4wd but when it does,,,both the 4wlo and 4whi lights are lit?? I've changed the switch with a good one and still the same?

When you say you've changed the motor..which one?
Did you change the actuator at the front differential or the encoder motor on the transfer case?

good question ...the encoder motor is the componet that places the vehicle in 4WD...not the front diff actuator , which only locks the front axles together ...

the problem is most likely in the transfercase...could need new motor of transfercase...fluid changes are needed every 30,ooo mi even if you do not use 4wd...

I know,
When he says it won't go into 4wd and he replaced a motor..I don't know which one he replaced. There could only be 3 components that could be bad??
The Front actuator, the encoder motor on the transfer case or the TCCM ..the brain that controls the switching function..
from what I have read so far, these would be the components I'd check..most common seems to be the encoder motor.
Has the OP pulled any codes from the truck?
