2000 silverado-low / no oil pressure at startup

2000 silverado-low / no oil pressure at startup for first few seconds, then pressure jumps to 40 psi. Once engine is warm holds 40 psi @ idle, after driving for an hour or so, hold 60 psi while driving and 40 @ idle. My question, what would cause low to no oil pressure @ startup and is ther a fix for this problem.

May be a bad gauge or oil pressure sending unit.
Check oil pressure with a manual oil pressure test gauge.
Post back what the manual gauge shows on oil pressure.
Are you using a cheap or fram oil filter.
What weight oil?

How is oil level and oil condition?

what oil filter are you using ? this appears to be the check valve not holding oil ..also I believe there are check balls /springs in the oil filter mount..

Yes come to think of it I am using a fram filter, seems like this all started when I changed my own oil with fram filters. As far as oil was running mobile 1 and changed to castrol 10w-30w with an additive (lucas). Thanks

use the wix or pure one Purolator oil flters..they cost about 5-6.oo ea...advance auto has the pure one..that is what I have been using for several years now..the Wix I also have used these are built with excellant check valves and a solid filter media..holds up to synthetic oils..

my opinion fram is not to be used, too many have suffered from these as they can rupture..

castrol 5-30wt is the correct oil...if you are in an area of high temps 10-30w is good..I many yrs ago used castrol and never had any problems. the engines were very clean even after hundreds of thousands of miles.. just be sure to change the oil when hot...this way all the contaminates will come out..let it drain for a half hour also..dino oil takes longer to drain...

why did you change to castrol oil ? I go 8,ooomi on the mobil 1, change the oil filter at 4,ooomi..the cost is about the same ...as using dino oil every 4,000mi...plus mobil1 you get better MPG/less wear..

Thought maybe the oil had something to do with it. Will go back to mobile 1 high mileage and better oil filter. Truck has 197K miles on it, runs strong, no oil burn. Great truck. Thanks for your help. Jim

Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W30 and a Wix or Purolator PureOne filter is the best you can get. Stay away from oil additives, the chemical engineers know what they're doing. Adding anything to the oil, can and in most cases will, adversly affect the additive package already in the oil.
