83 s-10 w/ 350 having fuel problems..
i just got a 1983 s10 a few days ago.. so i dont know much about the history on it.. it does have a 13'' lift on 38's.. its got a 350.. well the guy i got it from said the carb needed adjusted for it to run right.. he said the motor came out a 98 suburban, so im guessing it was swapped from fuel injected to carb.. it has a holley intake and a holley 4 barrell carb, not sure what size.. just takin a guess ill say a 600 or 650.. but i dont know much about carbs.. i had a friend of mine adjust the carb and it didnt help much.. when u crank it up it wont idle unless u hold the gas a little.. as soon as you let off or put it in gear it dies.. there is gas in the oil, and it smokes.. the shocks and rear end is covered in black carbon from the exhaust.. the spark plugs where fouled bad so i changed them and the oil and it didnt seem to help that much but did alittle.. i got a new air filter to.. any ideas? thanks and have a great day

Re: 83 s-10 w/ 350 having fuel problems..
Wow, maybe the carb has altitude sickness.
![]() Seriously, these carbs have a vacuum-operated device called a "power valve". This enriches the mixture slightly when intake manifold vacuum is low, such as during heavy acceleration. However, a bad carb backfire can blow-out the diaphragm, allowing raw gasoline to pour into the intake manifold when running, causing the rich mixture you are experiencing now. So I suggest rebuilding the carb, with a new power valve, new floats and new needles-and-seats. |

) or get it rebuilt. They are simple enough that I can rebuild one in about 20 minutes, no instructions required. |
