Thumbs up Codes 171 and 174- passing inspection

Just thought I'd relate my experience with a 2000 Windstar that is throwing codes 171 and 174. (and has for years, with no ill effects...the van runs FINE...)

I needed to get it inspected this month, and didn't have the time/money for what I believe to be the needed TSB as mentioned in this forum.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, this may get you by for inspection until you can do the actual fix:

(Much of this information was found in various posts in this very forum...I'm saving you some work! )

Put a can of Seafoam in the gas tank w/ at least 8 gallons of fuel.
Run it for 10 miles or so
Check for any obvious vacuum leaks..loose vacuum hoses, etc.
Change the air filter and clean off the MAF senson with MAF sensor cleaner found at any auto parts store.
Using a simple code reader (also found at any parts store for around 20 bucks), erase the codes.
Unhook the negative battery terminal and then turn the headlights on for at least 15 minutes (turning the headlights on may or may not be necessary, but it was suggested here, so I did it) to reset the "Keep Alive Memory". If you skip this part, your CEL will likely come back in about 5 miles...ask me how I know )
Turn the headlights off, reconnect the neg battery cable, and drive in the most fuel-efficient manner as possible for at least 20 miles.

Now, all you have to do is put another 50-60 miles on the van and take it to the inspection station. If the CEL is still off, you'll pass...

Keep in mind this worked in New York State, I have no knowledge of other States' emissions tests, so YMMV. My van now has 150 miles on it...passed inspection, and the CEL still has not come back on....I will update if it does...

Good Luck!
