Power window wiring

Im having that same problem with my GC. Someone in my jeep club told me the problem lies in the main switch on the drivers side. From what I can tell on the wiring diagrams I've looked up the power for all the windows runs through that main switch. I'd check the wiring looms on that switch, one of them could be bad.

power windows

Ryan supplied me with wiring diagram. turned out to be the wiring in the boot between the drivers door and the body. the insulation on the wire did not break but the copper wire was broken. solution was to install male / female electical conectors on broken wires.

Working fine ever since and THANKS AGAIN RYAN

Re: 95 jeep grand cherokee power windows wiring

I found the problem and fixed it awhile back. It lies in the rubber boot thats between the 2 door hinges on the drivers side door. Pull the boot back from the door and you should find 1 or 2 wires that have broke. When you go to fix them, dont use the crimp style butt connectors because they will pinch and break again. Solder the wires and put some shrink wrap on them.

The switch cluster is the 4 switches on the drivers door. If the wires are good going to the door then your problem is most likely that cluster.

Re: Re: 95 jeep grand cherokee power windows wiring

Hi All

I have power to my cluster of wires that connect to the rear of the switch (+12v on top connector and GND on the bottom connector). I for sure thought it was the switch so I bought a new one and to my horror still none of the windows work.

Please help someone.

Do you know for sure that you have power AND ground going to the switch?

Re: 95 jeep grand cherokee power windows wiring

Ok guys, did some more reading and finally found the problem. Even though I had 12V and GND the ground was floating if you know what I mean by that. It was not really a ground. When you operated the switch the 12Volts accross the wires for the window in question would drop to zero. I pushed a seperate wire into the ground pin on the back of the wiring harness and connected it to a metal piece on the door. BINGO the windows worked. I checked the wires in the rubber boot between the door hinges and found that the earth was broken. Soldered wire and problem is fixed.

Even though it cost me $120, that I did not need to spend. I am a happy man and so is my girlfriend who's car it was.

Thanks guys

which one is the ground wire and is it ok to ground it to the door panel, sounds like that could end up causing problems

Re: 95 jeep grand cherokee power windows wiring

It is the black wire. If you use a meter to buzz out the ground from the broken wire to the back of the switch then you can make sure it is the right one.

Best to resolider the broken wire together.

Good luck.

ground wire didn't solve things, there is power to the switch cluster but when I operate the switches the power drops to zero. Is this supposed to happen? After disconnecting the battery terminal for a bit my power locks work fine now. I'm thinking it's some kind of electronics problem, not wiring.

Re: Re: 95 jeep grand cherokee power windows wiring

Hey guys,
i had the same issue with my 95 Jeep GC 4X4. It was driving me crazy trying to track down problem with all 4 power windows. Power block fine. Fuse fine. Switches all fine (stick multimeter leads in two electrode receptacles where fuse goes and have someone hit the window switches on drivers door one by one). Finally, looked in the boot between door and chassis....sure enough there was broken black (ground) lead. I fuse it together and all 4 windows work perfecto. If you've checked everything else and you are still having difficulty with all four power windows....look for a broken ground wire.
