I have a 1961 cadilac series 62 with a 390 v8 in it ive replaced everything under the dis. including the dis. cap and coil. I have spark coming from the coil and from the points and the carb. is pumping gas to the motor but no matter what i try i cant get it to start. the engine has not been rebuilt yet and it ran about 6 months ago before i bought it.

Re: 61 cadillac ignition issues

Have you pulled the plugs and tested for spark at the plugs?

Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are foulled by oil, fuel or carbon?

Have you tried pouring a couple of ounces of fresh gas down the carb, then starting it?

If yes, then rebuild the carb.
Vehicles that are lest unused for long periods of time should be prepped for storage. This includes draining the gasoline from the carb's float bowl.
A car which is simply 'parked' is often asking for trouble, especially if the carb is old and dirty/gummy, inside and out.
In this case, the float may be stuck in the 'up' position, preventing fuel flow. Or the float bowl is full of gummy, thickened fuel /water /dirt which cannot pass through the jets.

So, get a rebuild kit, some spray cans of carb cleaner and a compressed air source. Take the carb apart clean it out, blow out all the passages and install the replacement parts from the kit. Then you should be good to go.
