IC pipes

Hey guys, silvreclipse convinced me a few days agotp go ahead and upgrade the size of my piping to 2.5(its currently 2). I forgot to ask, and he hasn't been online today, but I want to go ahead and order the pipe kit today, but I have 2 questions.

1- Does the piping need to be the same size on the hot AND cold side? Like bc it looks like if its much bigger than it is righ tnow,it won't line up with the tb...so I was wondering if it needed to be like2 ont he cold side or something.

2-These pipes come with lips, but if I have to cut one, and want to be able to feel secure about the coupler not popping off lol, is it ok to like, use pliers and bend/flare out the end of the pipe? Does this make sense?

1) Keep the piping the same size. Use reducer couplers to attach them to whatever you need to.

2) Seen people on Tuners do a variation of this. Another way is to spray the ends where the coupler sits with hairspray.

Its ok to have the hot side smaller but dont make the cold side smaller than the hot.

I wouldn't worry about lips on the pipe, i run several without lips on 20+psi with no issues. As long as you got tbolts you should't have any problems

Ok, and one other thing. I removed my side mount setup last night, and tried to move the pipes around to get an idea of how the front mount will fit. I have no option but to have a straight piece of pipe go across the bottom, like from one side to the other(from drivers side to passengers). It worries me that it has to go beneath that cross member thats in the center, but its not too bad, the pipe doesn't hang any lower than anything else on the rest of the underside...is this ok? Like it basically touches the bottom of that piece of the frame...just making sure this is ok

I thought its ok to have a larger hot side piping, for example: 2.5" cold and 3" hot. I know with some kits, its offered for $100 more. Not worth it IMO.
As long as the piping isn't below the car you'll be fine. Clearance is really the only you have to worry about with piping.

Dont run it under the xmember. It will get crushed. Just buy a universal pipe kit and sell all of that pipe you have. Dont run the pipes to the same side unless you have an intercooler like that. Check out Daves pics of how his pipes run around the front of the car.

That's right. Keep the piping up high and inside the protection of the car. Granted it's a different turbo setup, but this is how I ran mine.

You can see I go AROUND everything.


Then inside looks like this


There's some short-route IC setups where the outlets face in toward the engine bay, and just require some minor frame cutting. Plus I want to say only 1Gs really have that full option. But if you just have a universal kit with the outlets on the side, go around the front frame and then up.

It comes close. The above pic was when I first did the setup, and had a straight coupler coming off the turbo. Now it's a 45* reducer coupler and it moved it alittle farther away. I will wrap the exhaust right there once everything is how I want it. The heat from the exhaust pipe will heat the air in the IC piping, but this is before it even goes through the intercooler, so there'st still more cooling involved.

Ok so, if my pipe does happen to come really close to the dp, I can just wrap that section of the dp with heat wrap? I ordered a roll on ebay but never used it..

Ya. You actually wrap both the exhaust and the IC pipe. If you get a universal kit you can cut everything where you don't have the piping anywhere near the DP. I was limited based on turbo location because of the manifold and how the DP had to join up with the flexpipe.
