99 Jeep Issues

Alright, I've got this Myriad of issues with my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Problems have been around for a while (as I haven't been able to afford to get them fixed) so I imagine they've led to other problems.

First, my hatch. The lock has stripped, at least that's what I think. It tries to unlock, but that's just a waste of time. Something newish that has happened though. For some reason, it says that the hatch is open....even though it isn't. I don't know if it's something electrical....which more than likely it is. But now I can't lock my vehicle. Since it randomly detects the hatch open, it sets off the alarm as well. Believe me when I say that leaving it unlocked is inconvenient. Some random bum just opened the door and took off with my bowling balls. Also, the windshield wiper stopped working back there. Though, the wiper fluid still comes out. In the front, the wipers work but the fluid doesn't come out.

Second, a more recent event that has caused me problems. While driving, my vehicle studders a little and then shuts off. The "Check engine" Light comes on as well. I usually just put it in park and re-start it. That USED to work, but that time has passed. Now once that happens, I have to let it run for 5 minutes and hope for the best. I've taken my vehicle to the mechanics for this problem. All they did was clean some fuel actuator and a couple of other things.....but the problem still exists after two weeks of visiting the mechanic. The guys in my office say that chances are that it is the fuel filter or pump. I'm hoping that this will be resolved soon though through those mechanics.

Finally, the minor things. The front speakers are somewhat broken. I can't turn it up loud or i hear static. Actually, this is probably not even worth mentioning. The "Airbag" light comes on from time to time. The door gaskets are loose (no adhesive) and the rear seatbelts are brokenish.

But yeah, here is everything that is wrong with my jeep. Any ideas as to how i would go about fixing it. Well, more specifically the first paragraph. I would just prefer to go into a mechanic and have an idea on what they would be doing to it....and more importantly around how much it would cost. I would really like to not get raped by the local dealership if I could help it.

Yeah, I agree with freetimehelper. The shutting off issue does sound like the CPS.

As far as the rear door, I had a door actuator fail on my 00 GC; you'll need to remove the panel from the rear door, and replace the actuator. I haven't done a rear door but it's got to have more room to work than the driver's door!

(Alternately, you could lock it by hand, then use the key to lock/unlock the driver's door...this would save ca$h and keep your tailgate locked.)

Re: 99 Jeep Issues

The rear latch and wiper issues may be caused by corrosion my wifes jeep had the same problems , I disassembled the latch and wiper motor ,cleaned and lubricated them with silicone grease. Also the shaft on the wiper motor was seized in the housing and took quite a bit of effort to get it out. This fixed my problem hope it helps you.

Re: 99 Jeep Issues

The airbag light problem is the clockspring in the steering wheel. I replaced mine never a problem since.
