2000 Safari starting issues.

My old thread is gone, never got a PM saying it was deleted so I assume a database error, I'll re-post.

Our 2000 Safari will sometimes start, sometimes not... usually seems to fail in the morning.

Cranks fine
battery is fine

New rotor, cap, plugs, wires, fuel pump.

All work done at a reputable garage, brought it back and they say its not throwing any codes, no idea whats wrong.

One day it starts, next day it wont?

Faulty parts? If the cap was bad, would it sometimes start like this?

It worked fine last 4 days, then dead again this morning!

We are baffled, any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: 2000 Safari starting issues.

Make sure the cap used was a high quality piece. Preferably a AC-Delco. Fuel pressure can always be a culprit. Test the fuel pressure.

Should be at least 57psi or is it 59psi?? Old Master which is it? Seems like it's 59 to even get that engine to start.

Something to add while we wait on what parts went on and a fuel pressure test.

When we first got the van, the dome lights would come on upon opening the door, and the radio would stay on after shutting the engine off until the drive opened their door. This doesn't happen anymore.... Related maybe?

Re: 2000 Safari starting issues.

We need to know if it's losing spark or fuel when it acts up. The next time it acts up, open the air cleaner box, (2 snap clips) and direct a one second shot of carb cleaner in the hose toward the engine, then try to start it. If it starts, it's lack of fuel, if not, probably an ignition problem. That way we know what system to diagnose

AC Delco ignition parts are very important on the 4.3L engnies, they can be very fussy.

Fuel pressure for the 4.3L CSFI engine is: Key on, engine off, fuel pump running: must be 60psi to 66psi and remain above 55psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the pump shuts off. Post your results.

Think we got it diagnosed. Was throwing spark on the coil wire, figure its getting wet when it gets mild... waiting on new coil!

That would do it! Let us know how it goes.

Coil seems to have fixed it! Fingers crossed the problem doesn't return!
