Caliper hanging

left front caliper still hanging on '93 PA. This has been going on quite a while. It is not so severe that the vehicle is un-driveable but the left outer pad wears out well before everthing else. Rotor and wheel are hotter than right side but rotor has never warped.

Here's the history:

ABS went out about 5 yrs ago never fixed
master cylinder replaced once in that time (for another reason)
left caliper has been replaced three times over that time
caliper pins and boots replaced once
I am very careful to make sure the boots, pins, guide rails are clear, free and lubed

replaced pads today. Don't know why I didn't notice before (as I have replaced pads many times) but while reseating/collapsing caliper pistons, the left side was much harder to depress than the right. (Sometimes when I'm pinched for time I don't crack the bleed valves. Just empty the MC reservoir as it rises. I realize that this is hard on MC seals, but I go very slowly and this has never caused problems if done very slowly). Have done it this way many times and it seems unrelated to the problem.

At first this sounds like a hanging cal piston, but the cal is fairly new.

I'm moving on to either:

a collapsing brake hose (someone mentioned that on the pressure stroke the hose walls are kept "open" by the pressure but on the return stroke the hose lining "collapses" and restricts the backflow thus restricting the caliper piston return). Hose looks OK and is not kinked, but I believe is original.

or.....was thinking that maybe when the ABS went out, the ABS pistons/valves came to rest in a partially closed position. Is this possible and how could I get the ABS to cycle without investing the $$$$ involved in repairing ABS ( I don't think the car is worth as much as that!!) ? Maybe I would get lucky and have the ABS come to rest in an "open" position. ;-)

Any ideas appreciated. Tired of replacing pads every few months.

The rubber hose deteriorates from the inside, regardless of what the outside looks like, replace the hose.

The Brake hose is collapsed internally....

I've seen the brake hose failure many times. Most often it occurs after a brake or front end service. Disturbing it aggravates it.

Hose replaced. Got to get out on the hi-way for a while where I don't use the brakes and check wheel temperatures.

Wheel temperatures appear to be more even now. Will give it a few months and see how the pads hold up.
