1998 lumina ltz starting problems

i have a 1998 lumina ltz. sometime the car will start and sometimes it wont.i also have an automatic start installed on the car. the car does start occasionally and when it does its with either the auto start or with the key. After it starts i am able to shut it off and start it again multiple times with no trouble. But then i wait a couple of hours and the car won't start again. i know the starter is good because i replaced it and the problem did not go away. i think it has something to do with the ignition switch or the VATS system but im not sure how the automatic start is wired in. PLEASE HELP

Thanks
Anthony

Welcome to AF. Can we assume no start means it will not turn over, if so when this happens does the security lite on the dash stay on, of course we cannot tell how your remote start is wired in. BTW used to live in Bellmore.

Re: 1998 lumina ltz starting problems

I had the same exact problem. I have a remote start also. If yove been using regular gas 87 octane your throttle body is dirty and isnt opening. On mine i could drive it all day with no problems then shut it off and a few hours later it wouldnt start until 5 hours later. So bring it to a mechanic and have them check the throttle body ASAP. and if its the throttle body start using 89 octane.

Re: 1998 lumina ltz starting problems

oh cool did u used to go to bellmore train station on friday nights? and yes the security light stays on. every emergency light is on. i think it could be the resistor that the auto start people put in to match the key is going bad but it could also be the neutral safety switch. would u know what color wire the resistor would be wired to??

Sounds like you need to take it back to the people that installed the auto start system and have them correct the problem.

1998 lumina ltz starting problems

Lumina LTZ build 1998 3,8l 6Cy 155256 miles

Hello,

today my Lumi won't start, no noise nothing!, no click(from starter) "silent is the name". No lights everthing ist out of work. I proof all the fuses, they all O.K also i've tried to start in "neutral" what's happend?

for about 5 weeks the same problem, at first i thougt that the Fuel Pump is defect, because if i start, ididn't hear any noise from that pump(somtimes work sometimes no), and therfor i change ist by new one.

and today i know that must be am other problem, has anybody an idea?

kindley regards
schmalen

Octane has NOTHING to do with throttle body deposits.

"Top Tier" gasoline in ANY octane rating could conceivably help; although it's kind of a stretch to think that added detergent in gasoline could prevent deposits in a dry throttle body.

Do you have power to the small wire at the starter solenoid (connected to the "S" terminal) during cranking?

If you have power to the S terminal when the key is turned to "crank", you've probably got a defective starter or starter solenoid.

If you do NOT have power to the S terminal, there's a wiring problem between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid.

Re: 1998 lumina ltz starting problems

Thanks

Today i bridge the battery, ----and the engine start. Than i let that engine for an our running, stop it ans will start again -- the same problem nothing! no noise no light.

the second time i bridge the battery, engine start directly, but i listen that the fuel pump is running continued, i proofed the relais,-- the relais was very hot! also if i change that Relais with an new one,- the pump is running.

The Fuel Pump is new, i build it in for a couple of weeks

kindley regards

What is the voltage at the battery when the car is running? Need 13.5 - 14 volts or more.

Check battery standing voltage when it does not start also.

I am assuming "bridge the battery" means what we call jump start? Using another battery to boost it? Just so I understand what you're doing...
