Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

I would have preferred the 2 door version but the Revell/Monogram version was not available so I decided the Hasegawa 4 door version (a very nice kit)would have to do. I am no expert but the shape looks pretty much the same as the 2 door to me except that it does not look quite as sporty!

My plan is to modify it so that it has the style of a 1970's saloon car racer!

I started off by cutting the body work as shown below:

This was so that the new wheels that I have chosen would fit with the stance that I am looking for, I am using Fujimi Minilite style 15 inch racing wheels:

The picture below shows the new wheels compared to one of the narrower tyres supplied with the kit!:

I have had to reduce the width of the wheels and tyres as shown in the pic's below so that they look convincing and fit into the chassis without modification.

Below is the original body shell with the new wheels to show how it looked before any modifications:

To achieve the look I am going for I have added Fujimi wheel arch extensions to complete the 1970's old school racer look! This was a fraught task and I managed to get loads of glue all over the place especially on the left hand side! I have removed this and below are pictures showing where I have got to so far. You will notice that I managed to snap the front left wheel arch extension when I was trying to bend it to the correct shape!

All comments welcome!

These cars really don't need much to turn heads; flares, wheels, and a height adjustment do just fine.

Even being a 4-door, I think it still looks sharp. Looking forward to more updates, nice progress so far. Geez, how many models do you have on the go? I'm in over my head with just one.

Thanks for the comments.

I have quite a few on the go at the moment, at least 10! I am using our cold winter time in the UK to sort out bodywork and suspension set ups on a number of kits with the plan of painting when the weather improves in a couple of months time, hopefully I can then complete more than the 2 that I did last year!

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

Looking good, must have been lots of fun & games fitting the wheelarches! It looks a bit like the Fiat 128 racers from the 70's too, which is no bad thing as they looked cool. Check out www.touringcarracing.net. This is a fantastic site with lots of period racing photos of 1970's / 80's rorty saloons opposite locking and 3 wheeling, marvellous!

Cool thanks for sharing as i never new that hasegawa produced a datsun. Good luck on it and the wheel arches will suit the wheels well.

Thanks for the comments all! I am thinking of doing it in a bright orange! Similar to the old Datsun 240Z's factory colour schemes!
