All 3.1 and 3.4 L owners at what mileage you had to replace certain parts because of

bought it brand new in 1997 with 3 miles
at 500 miles my tachometer needle started to jump and freeze at 4000 rpm every time I turn off the engine.(engine speed does not increase just needle jumps)
at 15000 high pressure power steering line developed very very tiny leak (still drive it like that since it is not giving me any problems)
at 20000 had to replace egr gasket, (every time the heater was on, I smelled exhaust in the cabin)
at 32000 I had to replace injector #3 suddenly completely failed and was giving me p0303 and flashing check engine light

at 45000 I had to replace LIM because of steamy exhaust
at 46000 ac clutch air gap decreased and started to make metallic noise
at 47000 lower control arm bushings failed complitely
at 48000 on cold winter day tried to start and my belt tension-er fell apart
at 51000 had to replace coolant cap (coolant was coming out of the plastic coolant reservoir)
at 53000 heater core started to leak.
what were your problems?

This does not really apply to a Grand Am, however we had a 3.1 in our 95 Buick Regal. Bought it new and had absolutely no trouble with the 3.1 or the car. The only thing I didn't like was when cold, the 3.1 sounded like a diesel, and rattled like crazy until it warmed up. Did that from day one to we turned it in with a lot of miles on it. Supposedly normal for a 3.1. I feel for your problems you mentioned, hope thwey were warrenty items. I have a Lucerne that is was a piece of junk. It had a 50k warrenty and thankfully things got repaired, however I was so pissed at GM I wrote to the President and he gave me another 20k on top of it.

I don't think the lobes broke, the actual camshaft broke in half. You could see half of it turning and the other half was not when you turned the motor by hand.

Re: All 3.1 and 3.4 L owners at what mileage you had to replace certain parts because

On my 02 Gt I had. My 3.4 only had a few things replaced in the end but much more was waiting to be done anyways heres what i had done:

Cat Conv @ 33589- it was plugged up to the point that the trans wouldn't shift anymore
Inner and outer transmission seals @ 41500 - Due to my axle not being replaced properly as a result of a car accident.
LIM @ 74000 - car was leaking oil and coolant at the same time... any longer i was looking at a full head gasket.

@ 89,000 I gave up on it and moved on to previous car my G6 with the 3.9

I had other non mechanical stuff reaplced like signal switches, steering wheel controls as well as routine maintenance. In the end though the car needed a ton of work like a new starter, the trans was slipping badly, all the electrical problems I was having...
